Global health security is the existence of strong and resilient public health systems that can prevent, detect, and respond to infectious disease threats, wherever they occur in the world. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) works 24/7 to protect the health, safety, and security of the American people and fight global health threats worldwide, so we don’t have to fight them here at home. CDC’s global health security work is carried out collaboratively by four CDC centers: The Center for Global Health, the National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases, the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, and the Center for Preparedness and Response. In today’s globalized society, a disease threat anywhere is a disease threat everywhere.

- Potential for accidental release, theft or illicit use of dangerous pathogens
The Global Health Security Agendaexternal icon (GHSA) is a global effort to strengthen the world’s ability to prevent, detect, and respond to infectious disease threats. Sixty-seven countries have signed onto the GHSA framework, including the United States, which made a strong commitment to the initial five-year period of GHSA and continues to support its strategic priorities through GHSA 2024. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) plays a leading role in GHSA implementation for the United States by working directly with partner country governments to strengthen public health systems and reduce the risk of infectious disease outbreaks.
In 2018, all member countries committed to the next phase of the GHSA strategic framework, termed “GHSA 2024”. GHSA 2024 positions member countries to develop the leadership, technical knowledge, and collaborative foundation to sustain health security in the long term.
