HPV Vaccine Uptake in Cancer Centers
About
In September 2017 the National Cancer Institute (NCI) awarded a second round of supplements to 12 NCI-designated cancer centers to support investigation of barriers, facilitators and implementation strategies to promote uptake of HPV vaccine in regions with low adolescent HPV vaccination rates. The short-term goals for this one-year supplement are to identify low-uptake areas within the cancer center catchment area, and to conduct an environmental scan focused on identification of local barriers, facilitators, and implementation strategies used to promote adolescent uptake of the HPV vaccine. The long-term goal is to use this information to develop or expand applied research to increase HPV vaccination uptake in regions where low uptake has been documented by the 2015 National Immunization Survey-Teen (NIS Teen). These administrative supplements are being offered in response to the Cancer Moonshot Blue Ribbon Panel Report’s recommendation “to expand the use of proven prevention and early detection strategies” and the President’s Cancer Panel (PCP) February 2014 report “Accelerating HPV Vaccination Uptake: Urgency for Action to Prevent Cancer.”
In 2014 NCI originally funded supplements to 18 NCI-designated cancer centers to support collaborations with existing state and local coalitions and HPV immunization programs.
