VORTEX-SE Timeline

Initial Results Shared

May–October 2016

Initial results will be shared and combined with the road map developed in the workshop in order to define the focus for the 2017 Spring Campaign (if funding support is available).

First Field Observing Campaign

March–April 2016

The first field observing campaign of VORTEX-SE will be held during these two months. The current concept is to operate during 4-5 periods of several days each, observing the growth of instability and shear in the atmosphere and the eventual thunderstorm activity, with any associated tornadoes, accompanying the passage of large-scale weather systems. The focus in this campaign will be on the boundary layer evolution during these events.

Huntsville Planning Session

11 November 2015

A planning session will be held in Huntsville, Alabama to begin the process of developing the Operations Plan for the Spring 2016 observing activities. This meeting will involve many of the investigators already being supported by NOAA in VORTEX-SE, as well as researchers who would like to collaborate using other funding sources.

VORTEX-SE Workshop

9–10 November 2015

The first VORTEX-SE Workshop will be held in Huntsville, Alabama. The goal of this workshop is to produce a roadmap showing specific research projects in the physical and social sciences that could be undertaken in the next few years, as well as the mechanisms for transferring knowledge to operations and applications. The projects will be linked by over-arching themes, and will often have cross-discipline collaborations.
