Sutherland Joins OPP as Program Director for Oceans and Atmospheric Sciences

Dr. Dave Sutherland has joined OPP's Antarctic Sciences section as the new Program Director for Oceans and Atmospheric Sciences. A large part of his research over the past decade has been examining ice-ocean interactions near with marine-terminating glaciers, including systems in Greenland, southeast Alaska, and the western Antarctic Peninsula.
Dr. Michael Jackson to Serve as Acting Head of Antarctic Sciences

Michael E. Jackson, currently the Program Director for the Earth Science in OPPâs Antarctic Sciences Section, will assume the duties of Acting Section Head Antarctic Sciences Section starting November 22, 2020. He will replace Dr. Alex Isern who has been appointed the Deputy Assistant Director for the Directorate for Geosciences.

Sheppard Promoted to OPP Executive Officer
Paul Sheppard has been promoted as the OPP Executive Officer in the Front Office of the Office of Polar Programs. Paul's previous position was the Chief Program Manager for the U.S. Antarctic Program within the Antarctic Infrastructure and Logistics Section (AIL). Paul joined the NSF in 2011 following his retirement from the U.S. Air Force.

Rhemann joins Office of Polar Programs as Science Assistant for Antarctic Sciences
Jennifer Rhemann has joined NSF as the new Science Assistant for Antarctic Sciences, Office of Polar Programs. Jennifer has supported the USAP as a contractor for 19 years, working 14 summers and six winters at McMurdo Station multiple support roles and has pursued graduate education in Antarctic sciences and polar law and policy. She has worked toward professional certifications including Incident Command Systems, Emergency Management, and Aviation Risk Management.

Stuart Gregory, a graduate of the U.S. Army War College, has joined OPP's Antarctic Infrastructure and Logistics (AIL) Section as transportation program manager. Immediately prior to coming to AIL, he was the business operations director at the Air Force Office of Energy Assurance (OEA), where he helped to increase energy resilience at Air Force installations.

Moore to Join Antarctic Sciences Section
Robert Moore will join OPP's Antarctic Sciences Section on October 15 as Antarctic Astrophysics and Geospace Sciences (AAGS) program director. Vladimir Papitashvili, the current AAGS program director, will remain with the section, focusing more on the large research facilities, such as the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and cosmic microwave background telescopes, at NSF's Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station.
