Public Resources Available from the caHUB Program

NCI's investment in caHUB resulted in the biobanking infrastructure utilized for the Genotype-Tissue Expression (GTEx) and Biospecimen Pre-analytical Variables (BPV) programs, and is currently utilized for the NCI Clinical Proteomics Tumor Analysis Consortium (CPTAC) program.

Several public resources have been made available to the public to facilitate high-quality biobanking:

Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)

SOPs that supported biospecimen collection for GTEx and BPV have been deposited into the SOP library at the NCI's Biospecimen Research Database (BRD) and in the SOP section of our website.

Histopathological Images

A web application was developed to allow the research community to view the histopathological image data for GTEx. The image data, originally in Aperio format, have been converted into the Deep Zoom image format for display using an embedded open-source image viewer. The image viewer is openly accessible and provides search, viewing, and download functions for high-resolution images with zooming capability, without a requirement for image software.

CDR and CDR-Lite

The Comprehensive Data Resources (CDR) was developed to support the biospecimen collection workflow, clinical data entry, case management, and review and curation of study data. CDR-Lite was conceived as a simpler version of CDR that is stripped of project-specific features and includes additional features to make a more broadly useful tool for the biobanking research community. The source code for CDR and CDR-Lite and associated documentation can be downloaded from GitHub (https://github.com/NCIP/CDR and https://github.com/NCIP/CDR-Lite ).

Common Data Elements (CDEs)

Integral to the CDR is the NCI Enterprise Vocabulary Services (EVS) which records the terms and definitions used in describing the overall biospecimen collection efforts. These are now published on NCI's cancer Data Standards Registry and Repository (caDSR) and NIH's CDE portal freely accessible to the biomedical research community.
