The National Cancer Institute’s Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences is pleased to announce the newly updated Cancer Trends Progress Report (CTPR), an online summary of trends in US cancer control measures. The annual report summarizes the nation’s progress against cancer in relation to Healthy People 2020 targets. It includes key measures of progress along the cancer control continuum—including prevention, early detection, diagnosis, treatment, life after cancer, and end of life—and uses national trend data to illustrate where improvements have been made.

From prevention to end of life, the report provides trends across the cancer continuum by sex, age, race, ethnicity, poverty income level, and education level. It displays those trends in relation to Healthy People 2020 targets, when available. New measures this year include Electronic Cigarettes (E-Cigarettes) on the Youth Tobacco Use page and Colorectal Cancer on the Genetic Testing page.

The National Cancer Institute (NCI)’s Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program is collaborating with the Department of Energy (DOE) on a 5-year pilot project that focuses on the use of high-performance computing to support cancer surveillance. Pilot 3 of the NCI-DOE Collaboration applies advanced computational capabilities and deep learning methods to population-based cancer data to understand the impact of new diagnostics, treatments, and other factors affecting patient outcomes.

Members and stakeholders of the collaboration came together for a two-day hackathon at the DOE’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Knoxville, Tennessee on September 10-11, 2019. The hackathon included a hands-on review of algorithms to improve efficiency of cancer registries and discussions of the next steps for implementation of the new tools in the registry workflow. The event also involved in-depth discussions on project focus areas, including privacy-aware computing, model... Read more

More than 40 in-person participants attended the QIE F2F meeting (pictured here outside of the NCI Shady Grove building). Attendees included representatives from NCI and from registries across the nation. They gathered to discuss SEER quality improvement efforts as well as current data collection issues facing the registries.

The NCI Surveillance Research Program’s Quality Improvement Experts (QIE) team hosted its annual QIE Face-to-Face (F2F) meeting at the NCI Shady Grove campus on August 14-15, 2019. The meeting brought together data quality experts from cancer registries across the country both in person and online to discuss current and future projects, address relevant questions and concerns, and encourage collaboration.

The QIE F2F meeting focused on quality improvement updates for upcoming audit plans as well as discussion of data collection issues faced by the registries.

NCI has been working on a large project looking at neoadjuvant therapy and treatment activities. One session consisted of discussions about leveraging SEER data, such as to investigate the use of pre-operative systemic treatment. The goal of this research is to develop an algorithm using existing SEER data that will accurately ascertain someone’s likelihood of having received neoadjuvant... Read more

The Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) held its annual SEER Data Management System (SEER*DMS) Face-to-Face (F2F) Meeting on September 26-28, 2018. The meeting brought together members of the cancer surveillance community to discuss SEER*DMS enhancement projects, address relevant questions, and encourage collaboration. Representatives from 22 registries participated in person or online, and the event occurred at the NCI Shady Grove campus in Rockville, MD.

The F2F Meeting focused on updates from the NCI SEER Program and SEER*DMS workgroups, as well as discussions on cancer surveillance challenges and potential solutions forward. These challenges include: (1) the large amounts of data that must be converted from different formats; (2) the numerous information sources; and (3) the need to support new and complex infrastructure that integrates new types of data, including genomics, longitudinal treatment outcomes,... Screenshot of NCI Tobacco Policy Viewer with tab for smoke-free workplace laws open and map showing state and local coverage; tabs for smokefree restaurants and bars are visible but closed.

The NCI Tobacco Policy Viewer is an interactive online resource for the mapping, querying, and downloading of historical smoke-free policy data in the United States. The tool reveals variation across U.S. cities, counties, and states by the types of indoor areas that are smoke-free, length of time since the smoke-free policy came into effect, and number of people who are protected by the policy. This information was obtained from the American Nonsmokers’ Rights Foundation

The NCI Tobacco Policy Viewer provides access to the following statistics at state, county, and city levels:

Laws requiring 100% smoke-free non-hospitality workplaces Laws requiring 100% smoke-free restaurants Laws requiring 100% smoke-free freestanding bars

For more information, see the companion paper that describes the development of the NCI Tobacco Policy Viewer:... Read more
