NIMHD Health Disparities Research Institute
Virtual Course: August 9-13, 2021
The National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) will host the next Health Disparities Research Institute (HDRI) virtually from August 9-13, 2021. Sign up for NIMHD updates to receive notices about the course, application cycle and other announcements.
The HDRI aims to support the research career development of promising early-career minority health/health disparities research scientists, and stimulate research in the disciplines supported by health disparities science. Applications will only be accepted from individuals who meet NIH’s early-stage investigator (ESI) eligibility criteria.
Program Content
The program will feature lectures on minority health and health disparities research, small group discussions, mock grant review, and seminars. Institute participants will have the opportunity to meet with NIH scientific staff engaged in related health disparities research across the various NIH Institutes and Centers.
Lecture and seminar topics will focus on the etiology of health disparities, methods and measurement, and intervention and implementation research. Participants will receive consultation on developing a research interest into an application – R21, R01, K award - and preparing research strategies and methodologies for proposed studies.
Target Audience/Eligibility
This program is intended for early-stage research investigators who have completed their terminal degree or post-graduate clinical training within the past 10 years. Additionally, applicants must have either a Ph.D., M.D./D.O., Sc.D., Dr. P.H., Pharm.D., Psy.D., D.D.S./D.M.D. or equivalent doctoral degree from an accredited domestic or foreign institution. Applications will only be accepted from post-doctoral fellows, assistant professors, or early-stage investigators in comparable research positions. Further, applications will only be accepted from individuals who are planning to submit a K or R grant to NIH within the next 12 months. Individuals from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
Previous participants of the HDRI or the Translational Health Disparities Course are not eligible to apply. Similarly, NIH and HHS staff, including persons doing fellowships/training at NIH or an HHS agency, are not eligible to apply.
Selection Criteria
Participants will be selected based on several criteria:
- An NIH Biosketch that includes professional experience, educational achievements and a record of peer reviewed publications (first or co-authored).
- A brief essay outlining career goals, reasons for participating in the program, and plans for obtaining NIH funding.
- Two (2) letters of recommendation providing support for the candidate (one letter should be from a research mentor discussing the likelihood of grant submission within a year by the applicant).
- An NIH Specific Aims page that includes the scientific premise/background, aims/hypotheses, and proposed methodology that reflects a future NIH grant submission.

Preference will be given to applicants who can clearly demonstrate that they plan to submit an NIH grant application within one year of attending the HDRI. Additionally, applicants will be selected based on their research accomplishments, research interests, and potential for implementing the knowledge gained during the HDRI into their research program. Approximately 50 scholars will be selected to participate in the Institute.
Cost
There is no cost for participating in the HDRI. Admission is competitive and daily attendance is mandatory.

All applications must be submitted via the HDRI application portal by the due date; emailed applications will not be accepted. Applicants are encouraged to apply before the deadline since late submissions will not be accepted.
