The intended audience of this web page includes Veterans, pharmacists and pharmacy resident applicants.

Welcome to the Salt Lake City (SLC) Veteran Affairs (VA) Pharmacy Residency homepage. The SLC VA offers both PGY1 (General Practice) and PGY2 (Psychiatric Specialty Care) residencies. All of our post graduate programs are 12 months in duration and ASHP accredited. Our objective is to train residents for patient centric clinical positions by advancing their knowledge, skills, and attributes in pharmaceutical care. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the residency program director.

  • PGY1 program: Currently, there are three PGY1 positions available at two different sites. Two positions are in SLC and one is in Pocatello, Idaho. The SLC site offers a more traditional program emphasizing inpatient and ambulatory care, while the Pocatello site is primarily a longitudinal experience in ambulatory care. Please note these programs have different ASHP match codes for the application process.
    • The SLC goal is to prepare residents for acute care or ambulatory care positions, adjunct faculty positions, or further PGY2 or fellowship training.
    • The Pocatello goal is to prepare residents for ambulatory care positions, adjunct faculty positions, or further PGY2 or fellowship training.
  • The PGY2 program: Currently, there is one PGY2 program position available. This program is an advanced practice mental health residency, designed to prepare the resident for a psychiatric pharmacy specialist position or adjunct faculty position.

VA Mission Statement: To fulfill President Lincoln's promise “To care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow, and his orphan” by serving and honoring the men and women who are America’s veterans. The Medical Center aspires to this goal by providing exceptional health care, improving the wellbeing of our Veterans.

VA Core Values: Our core values describe the culture of care that we want to provide to our Veterans. It is contained in the mnemonic I-CARE. This stands for integrity, commitment, advocacy, respect, and excellence.

Residency Mission Statement: The purpose of the VASLCHCS PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program is to prepare pharmacist clinicians for patient care positions in acute care and ambulatory care settings within the VA Healthcare System. Further, the goal is to prepare residents to pursue positions in a postgraduate year two (PGY2) residency or fellowship. Residents will be provided the opportunity to accelerate their growth beyond entry-level professional competence in patient-centered care, pharmacy operational services, and to further the development of leadership skills that can be applied to any practice setting.
