Gastrointestinal (GI) SPOREs
SPOREs in GI cancers focus on translational research in the gastrointestinal system and include cancers of the colon, rectum, stomach, esophagus, small intestine, liver, gallbladder and other digestive organs. Over 430,000 newly diagnosed cases of cancer in the digestive system and 164,000 deaths are expected in the United States in the year 2020, the American Cancer Society estimates. Colorectal and colon cancers are particularly prevalent and represent 14% of all new cancer cases in the U.S. They are expected to cause 53,200 deaths in the United States in 2020. Currently, GI SPOREs focus on cancers of the colon, rectum, esophagus, liver, gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST), and pancreas, which account for the majority of new diagnoses.
