We award grants to organizations (e.g., schools, hospitals, health departments). We also offer a cost-sharing grant to states and territories.

How do you support current BHWET grantees?

We provide supplemental awards for current BHWET grantees. Grantees and health centers form interprofessional care teams. These teams improve access to opioid use disorder (OUD) and other substance use disorder (SUD) treatment.

Who received recent awards?

In 2018, 21 grantees received up to $400,000. These awards are part of the HHS $1 billion initiative to combat the opioid crisis.

The OWEP for Professionals funds training for behavioral health professionals who provide OUD and other SUD prevention, treatment, and recovery services in high need and high demand areas.

The OWEP for Paraprofessionals improves community-based training for students who will become peer support specialists and other types of behavioral health-related paraprofessionals.

Both programs focus on opioid use disorder (OUD) and other substance use disorders (SUD).

Our health careers programs improve the public health. They

Strategic Partnerships

CHGME helps freestanding children's hospitals maintain their graduate medical education (GME) programs. These programs train resident physicians and dentists. Get more details on the CHGME program.

You must be a freestanding, children’s hospital. And, you must meet these criteria*:

  1. You must have a Medicare payment agreement;
  2. The Medicare Inpatient Prospective Payment System (IPPS) must exclude you; and

PCTE - Physician Assistant (PCTE-PA)

PCTE-PA increases the number of primary care physician assistants (PA)—particularly in rural and other high-need settings. Training strengthens the access to, and delivery of, primary care services across the U.S.

Funds increase the number of dental and dental hygiene faculty. Through loan repayment, the grant helps training programs attract and retain dental and dental hygiene faculty. The focus is on pediatric dentistry faculty supervising residents.

We prepare general, pediatric, and public health dentists for practice. They lead new models of oral health care delivery. They do this by supporting innovative postdoctoral dental residency training programs.

Apply to the State Loan Repayment Program (SLRP)

The SLRP provides cost-sharing grants to states and territories. This allows you to operate your own loan repayment programs.

Your programs must repay loans to primary medical, mental/behavioral, and dental healthcare clinicians. These clinicians must be working in Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs).
