Program Officer with Physical Activity Expertise Sought for Risk Factor Assessment Branch

The Epidemiology and Genomics Research Program (EGRP) within the National Cancer Institute's Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences welcomes letters of interest from scientists with physical activity expertise to serve as a Program Officer in its Risk Factor Assessment Branch (RFAB).

About RFAB

One of EGRP’s five branches, RFAB focuses on (1) the development, evaluation, and dissemination of high-quality risk factor metrics, methods, tools, technologies, and resources for use across the cancer research continuum, and (2) the assessment of cancer-related risk factors in the population.

RFAB's mission is to support planning, developing, directing, coordinating, and evaluating a comprehensive program of research aimed at:

  • Developing and validating tools for measuring the full complexity of a range of cancer-related risk factors across the lifespan, sociocultural subgroups, and socioecological contexts. Examples of risk factors include, but are not limited to: diet, physical activity, and weight management.
  • Overseeing methods used to examine distributions and determinants of cancer-related risk factors in the general population and among subgroups, to assist in informing clinical and public policies that address these factors.
  • Synthesizing and disseminating findings from the research supported by RFAB to the public, health care professionals, scientists engaged in cancer control, and the public health community.

RFAB advances research in risk factor assessment through a portfolio of grants related to risk factor assessment and obesity policy research, as well as collaborative scientific activities within the division, across NCI/NIH, throughout the federal government, and with key stakeholders at partner organizations. RFAB also develops, supports, maintains, evaluates, and updates numerous tools for the broad scientific community related to the assessment and evaluation of diet, obesity, and physical activity.

Position Description

The Program Officer will collaborate with a group of epidemiologists, nutritionists, physical activity scientists, pre- and postdoctoral fellows, and administrative staff to develop and support innovative research initiatives, tools, and collaborations for broad scientific areas, such as diet assessment, physical activity assessment, dietary patterns, diet and physical activity measures and methods, measurement error, nutritional biomarkers, and obesity policy.
