Alcohol

For most adults, moderate alcohol use is not a health concern. Women who drink no more than 1 drink a day (and not more than 7 drinks per week) and men who drink no more than 2 drinks a day (and not more than 14 drinks per week) are at low-risk for developing problems with alcohol use. However, drinking too much, too often, is associated with an increase in mortality rates and chronic health conditions. Within VA, research focused on alcohol misuse includes programs and services to curb alcohol dependence; understanding the prevalence of alcohol use disorders; and looking at risk factors for alcohol misuse.
