The Wisconsin Women's Business Initiative Corporation (WWBIC) will use $760,416 in CED funds to implement the Sherman Phoenix Support Project, which will transform a vacant, fire-damaged building into a commercial space for 20 small entrepreneurs offering prepared foods, wellness services, and arts and cultural activities in the Sherman Park Neighborhood of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The project will serve as a model for healing the city through economic growth after the civil unrest and riots in the Sherman Park Neighborhood that began in August 2016. WWBIC will partner with Sherman Phoenix, LLC for tenant build-out, operations, and programmatic costs to develop the building. WWBIC will also provide business technical assistance to the tenant entrepreneurs and financial capability education and coaching to employees to help them gain control over their personal finances, build assets, improve their economic well-being, and move toward economic self-sufficiency. The project will create 64 new, full-time jobs, 75% of which will be filled by individuals with low income. |
