Abbie Hoffman
Abbot Howard "Abbie" Hoffman (1936-1989) was a political and social activist, especially in the 1960s. The FBI investigated Hoffman under anti-riot laws and as a domestic security threat. The files in this release range from 1968 to 1973 and cover Hoffman’s role as a leader in the Yippie Party (Youth International Party), his role in anti-war protests at the 1968 Democrat National Convention in Chicago, and his subsequent trials as one of the “Chicago Eight” conspiracists.

Adolf Hitler
Adolph Hitler (1889-1945) was leader of the National Socialist (Nazi) Party and Chancellor of Germany from 1933-1945; he led that country into World War II in 1939. The documents in this file range from 1933 to 1947, but primarily fall either in 1933 or between 1945 and 1947. In 1933, the FBI investigated an assassination threat made against Hitler. In the aftermath of Germany’s surrender in 1945, western Allied forces suspected that Hitler had committed suicide but did not immediately find evidence of his death. At the time, it was feared that Hitler may have escaped in the closing days of the war, and searches were made to determine if he was still alive. FBI Files indicate that the Bureau investigated some of the rumors of Hitler’s survival.
Al Capone
Alphonse Gabriel “Al” Capone (1899-1947) rose to infamy as a gangster in Chicago during the 1920s and early 1930s. The Bureau of Investigation (the FBI’s predecessor) joined the Bureau of Prohibition and other agencies in investigating Capone. In 1931, Capone was sentenced to prison for tax evasion. Suffering from a case of syphilis that left him too mentally ill to resume his previous criminal activities, he was paroled in 1939 and settled in Florida, where he lived until his death in 1947.

Alcatraz Escape
On the morning of June 12, 1962, guards at Alcatraz—a federal penitentiary opened in 1933 on a desolate island in San Francisco Bay—discovered that prisoners John Anglin, Clarence Anglin, and Frank Morris had escaped. The FBI's thorough investigation, which lasted for nearly two decades, was unable to determine whether the three men successfully escaped or died in the attempt. The files begin with the breakout in 1962 and continue through December 1979 when the FBI closed the case.
