Steep Slope Reclamation
Reclamation in Utah presents some unique and difficult challenges. Many of the mines are located in extremely steep and mountainous terrain. Both the Star Point and Des Bee Dove mines were started many years before SMCRA, but the reclamation performed at these sites is nothing short of amazing. Using in-place materials, the Operators have been able to achieve Approximate Original Contour as well as develop stable slopes and drainages. Other mines have had similar success using special roughening and water harvesting techniques. A recent example of steep slope reclamation was accomplished by the AML program when they brought in a spider hoe to navigate the steep slope to an abandoned portal in order to complete a fire suppression project. Utah is meeting the vertical challenge.
