Advanced Network Technologies Division

Establishing the Technical Basis for Trustworthy Networking

The Advanced Network Technologies Division is one of seven technical divisions in the Information Technology Laboratory.

The Advanced Network Technologies Division (ANTD) provides expertise in Network Science and Engineering.  It develops knowledge about networks to understand their complexity and inform their future design. It seeks to discover and understand common principles and fundamental structures underlying networks and their behaviors.  It studies the processes underlying networks evolution and the paradigms for network engineering to enhance their efficiency, reliability, security, and robustness.  ANTD remains very active in the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) where it participates in the development of network protocols and algorithms, studies system issues in interoperability of communication networks, and actively transitions the lessons learned to industrial partners for commercialization.

It responds to national priorities with programs in Internet Infrastructure Protection, Cloud Computing, Next Generation Internet (NGI), and several joint-projects such as  Smart Grid, Smart Manufacturing, and Localization.

ANTD has recently extended its NGI program to include Software-Defined Networking and Network Function Virtualization projects, and initiated new programs in Information Centric Networking, High Performance Networking, and Internet of Things (IoT).

Towards Trustworthy Networking

The ANTD Trustworthy Networks Program works with industry to resolve systemic vulnerabilities in existing and emerging critical network infrastructures and advance the development of potentially disruptive technologies to improve the trustworthiness of future networks.
  • Robust Inter-domain Routing: works with Internet industry to develop technologies to improve the security and resilience of Internet routing. Current focus: global route leak mitigation.
  • High Assurance Domains: researches and develops new technologies to address key trust and security issues in enterprise networks. Current focus: Zero Trust Networks.
  • Trustworthy Intelligent Networks: works with industry and academia to improve the trustworthiness and applicability of artificial intelligence and machine learning to networks and distributed systems. Current focus: AM/ML techniques for botnet and DDoS mitigation.
  • Software Defined and Virtual Networks: works to develop test and measurement techniques to advance the state of the art in software defined networks and to address robustness and security of virtualized networks. Current focus: high-speed programmable measurement.
  • Trustworthy Network of Things: research and develop network centric approaches to protect Internet scale deployments of IoT.  Current focus: MUD and secure device on-boarding.
