State Reports From the 2014 NSDUH

Find reports that present findings and data for U.S. states based on results of the 2014 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH).

NSDUH State Result Reports

NSDUH is an annual survey of the U.S. civilian, noninstitutionalized population ages 12 years or older. The combined 2013 and 2014 NSDUH reports provide state estimates for 25 measures of substance use and mental health outcomes. State and regional estimates are based on a small area estimation (SAE) methodology in which state-level NSDUH data are combined with county and sub-county level census data from the state.

The 2014 NSDUH Report: State Estimates of Adolescent Marijuana Use and Perceptions of Risk of Harm From Marijuana Use presents state-level prevalence estimates of marijuana use in the past month and perceptions of risk of harm from smoking marijuana once a month among adolescents ages 12 to 17.

The 2013-2014 NSDUH State Prevalence Estimates provide prevalence estimates and 95% confidence intervals for people ages 12 or older, 12 to 17, 18 to 25, and 26 or older. There are also estimates for people ages 12 to 20 for two alcohol measures.

The 2013-2014 NSDUH Estimated Totals by State provides the estimated totals and 95% confidence intervals for people ages 12 or older, 12 to 17, 18 to 25, 26 or older, and 18 or older. There are also estimated totals for people ages 12 to 20 for two alcohol measures. All CSV files can be downloaded.

The 2013-2014 NSDUH state-specific tables provide prevalence estimates for each state and estimated totals by age group, along with tables for the four census regions and the entire United States. You can access data for the entire United States, each state, or each region through the report’s table of contents.

State and Regional Methodology

State and regional estimates are based on a small area estimation methodology in which state-level NSDUH data are combined with county and census block group/tract-level data from the state.

The 2013-2014 NSDUH: Guide to State Tables and Summary of Small Area Estimation Methodology report is a guide to the development and presentation of 2013-2014 state estimates. A summary of the methodology is included as well as sample sizes, response rates, and population estimates.

The 2013-2014 NSDUH: Other Sources of State-level Data report provides a brief description of the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) and presents a comparison of state-level BRFSS and NSDUH prevalence estimates for alcohol and cigarette use among people ages 18 or older.
