Andres Clarens is Next Chair of NSF’s Advisory Committee for Environmental Research and Education

NSF is pleased to announce that Dr. Andres Clarens will serve as the new Chair of NSF’s Advisory Committee for Environmental Research and Education (AC ERE). Dr. Clarens has distinguished himself as an emerging leader in environmental research and education. He is currently an Associate Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Virginia, the Director of the Virginia Environmentally Sustainable Technologies Laboratory, and the Associate Director of the University of Virginia’s Environmental Resilience Institute. His research is focused broadly on anthropogenic carbon flows and the ways that carbon dioxide is manipulated, reused, and sequestered in engineered systems. He received an NSF CAREER award in 2013 and was a U.S. Fulbright Fellow at the National Technical University of Argentina in 2016. He joined the AC ERE in 2014 – when he was also a member of NSF’s Directorate for Engineering Advisory Committee – and has been an active member of the committee ever since. He holds a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Virginia, and an M.S.E. and Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from the University of Michigan.
