APHIS Programs Authorized by the Farm Bill

Animal Health

The 2018 Farm Bill provided funds for three animal health programs: the existing National Animal Health Laboratory Network and two new programs, the National Animal Disease Preparedness and Response Program and the National Animal Vaccine and Countermeasures Bank. These three programs will work together to keep foreign pests and diseases out of the U.S., which will help farmers and ranchers provide high-quality agricultural products to consumers here and abroad.  Learn More

Feral Swine

In 2018, the Farm Bill provided $75 million for a pilot program to control and eradicate feral swine.  This funding is split between APHIS and USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service.  USDA is developing targeted projects that build on APHIS’ existing feral swine damage management program in those states where feral swine populations are the highest or most dense.  Learn More


Pests and Diseases of Concern

The 2018 Farm Bill requires APHIS to develop a list of animal and plant pests and diseases representing the gravest threat to U.S. agriculture. It also requires APHIS to have comprehensive strategic response plans to ensure that Federal and State governments are prepared to respond to them.  Learn More


  

Plant Health

The 2014 Farm Bill amended the Plant Protection Act to include and make permanent two important plant health programs: The Plant Pest and Disease Management and Disaster Program and the National Clean Plant Network. These programs expand APHIS’ ability to protect agricultural resources by providing funding for cooperators to complete projects that will benefit plant health.  Learn More
