Yuxia Cui, PhD., is a program officer in the Division of Extramural Research and Training (DERT) at NIEHS. Cui oversees a portfolio of grants that are focused on the development and validation of emerging technologies towards improved exposure and risk assessment in environmental health research. These include sensor technologies, omics-based approaches, biomarker discovery and validation, computational and informatics-based tools, as well as other innovative approaches that enable an integrated view and better understanding of the exposome.
Cui joined DERT in 2013, first as a Scientific Program Analyst to support the Exposure Biology and the Exposome Program. In this capacity, she actively contributed to the trans-NIEHS exposome efforts in raising the awareness of the exposome concept and served as the program coordinator for the NIEHS Children’s Health Exposure Analysis Resource (CHEAR). Currently, Cui serves as the program officer for the laboratory network of the Human Health Exposure Analysis Resource (HHEAR). She is also a member of the NIH Common Fund Metabolomics Program leadership team, serving as the Program Director and overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Program.
Cui received her doctorate in Environmental Toxicology and a certificate in the Integrated Toxicology and Environmental Health Program (ITEHP) from Duke University with dissertation research in toxicogenomics and molecular toxicology. Between 2008 and 2013, Cui conducted postdoctoral research in the Division of Intramural Research (DIR) at NIEHS, where she studied off-target/toxic effects of therapeutic drugs and ionizing radiation-induced DNA damage response. Cui also has a B.S. and M.S. in environmental science.
