Background

Prior to assuming his current role of deputy division leader for science and technology in the Nuclear and Chemical Sciences division in 2016, Ormand was the group leader for the Nuclear Data & Theory group for ten years. He is also currently serving as LLNL’s point of contact for the Department of Energy’s Office of Nuclear Physics. He was selected as a fellow to the American Physical Society in 2004. In addition to his work at LLNL, Ormand is an adjunct professor at Michigan State University, has served on numerous review panels for the Office of Nuclear Physics, and was a member of the Nuclear Science Advisory Committee from 2013–16.

Research Interests

Ormand’s research focuses on theoretical approaches using high-performance computing to describe the properties of atomic nuclei. His work includes ab initio descriptions of light nuclei, including the first implementation of three-body forces within the no-core shell model, which were shown to directly impact the low-lying spectrum of boron-10.
