Alternatives to irregular migration and violence matter
At the IAF, we work to build stronger and more sustainable communities across Latin America and the Caribbean. The region faces increasing challenges that threaten the the social fabric of communities. As a result of environmental degradation, increased violence, and high rates of poverty, many people seek safety for themselves and their families, as well as opportunities to improve their livelihoods elsewhere. This leads to increases in internal displacement and migration.
Stable and prosperous communities in Latin America and the Caribbean benefit everyone. Our work in this area complements U.S. strategy and activities of other federal agencies. The unique IAF model of community-led development allows us to reach civil society directly with a cost-effective approach to development. Together with our community partners, we build upon a long history of collaboration, commercial exchange, and bonds of friendship between the United States and countries in the region.
Enhancing peace and reducing poverty
We support community-led initiatives that promote alternatives to irregular migration in Latin America and the Caribbean. By addressing the root causes of out-migration and responding to communities’ specific needs, we strengthen the social and economic fabric of civil society. Examples of project outcomes we support include:
- Creating economic opportunities
- Strengthening agricultural resilience and sustainability
- Promoting greater participation in local decision-making
- Reducing or preventing violence at the community level
- Generating opportunities for individuals to engage in their communities in productive ways.
We have 50 years of experience providing targeted foreign assistance to local groups that advance home-grown solutions to these related social issues. Our funding for community-led efforts supports alternatives to irregular migration and addresses the push factors that drive it. These initiatives also ensure that the region’s most vulnerable citizens have greater voice, agency, and engagement with policies and practices that can improve their livelihoods.
