GEDI launched to the ISS on December 5th, 2018, to begin its 2-year mission of discovery.
The Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) project is currently under deployment. GEDI was competitively selected by NASA in July 2014 under the Earth Venture Instrument-2 program. Development of the system and science began in November 2014.
GEDI follows standard mission development phases. Phases A-D are focused on engineering development that leads to the final assembly and testing of the instrument. During these phases, the GEDI Science Definition Team (SDT) works on developing algorithms to deliver final GEDI data products, as well as implementing calibration and validation plans for those products.
GEDI was launched on Dec. 5th, 2018 and subsequently installed on the International Space Station. It successfully passed the commissioning period on March 25th, 2019 and will remain on the ISS for two years, constantly collecting data (Phase E). This data is processed by the GEDI Science Team and the first data should be released to the public in late fall 2019.
