NCRAR NIH NIDCD T-35 Summer Research Traineeships for AuD Students
The NCRAR is located at the VA Portland Health Care System in Portland Oregon. We have a limited number of traineeships available for summer 2021 that will be awarded to outstanding students currently enrolled in a graduate program leading to the Doctorate of Audiology (AuD) degree. These traineeships are funded by a grant from the National Institutes on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD). Students from all AuD programs in the U.S.A. are eligible to apply for this three-month summer program.
We anticipate that student trainees will work alongside scientists on one or more hearing-related studies. As a precaution, however, we have made contingency plans to move to an online format if needed for safety or logistical reasons. In addition to learning first-hand about the process of carrying out clinical research in audiology, students will attend seminars and lectures from clinical scientists, take part in NCRAR activities, such as laboratory and staff meetings, and NCRAR outreach activities. Students will also participate in an interactive ethics class, and other short courses arranged and hosted by NCRAR. At the end of the three-month traineeship, students will be expected to present their work to the NCRAR staff and to prepare a poster for presentation at the Spring 2022 AAS meeting in Arizona.
Eligibility:
- Must be enrolled in an accredited Au.D. graduate program
- Must not be currently enrolled in a Ph.D. program or in an AuD/PhD program
- Must have had at least one year of graduate work in the Au.D. program
- Must commit to a traineeship at the NCRAR for three months in the summer. Under special circumstances, it may be possible to work out a shorter time period if the graduate program cannot accommodate the student’s full three-month absence. However the monthly stipend will have to be prorated if participation is less than three full months. We strongly encourage students to stay for the full three months. If this is not possible, please let us know up front.
- Must be a US citizen or permanent resident.
- Discuss your interest in participation in this program with your faculty advisor.
- Correspond via email with Dr. Dawn Konrad-Martin at the NCRAR, indicating an interest in applying for the program: dawn.martin@va.gov
- Complete the application form and obtain all letters of recommendation as specified.
- Have one of the individuals providing a recommendation letter, fill out this evaluation table.
- Write a 1-2 page description of what you hope to gain from this research experience. Feel free to consult with your faculty advisor on this.
- Send a CV or resume that describes your professional and academic background

Students will receive a stipend to defray costs of living expenses in Portland, a Trimet pass for local travel, including travel to and from NCRAR, and funding to attend the AAS meeting in Spring 2022.
Deadline for receipt of applications for Summer 2021 is January 15, 2021.
Decisions regarding awarding of the traineeships will be made around February 15, 2021.
