Program Areas

FRA’s Office of R&D is organized into four Divisions and does work in ten program areas.  Our main focus is the DOT’s goal to improve transportation safety.  The following table shows how R&D Divisions and program areas relate to the most frequent causes of railroad accidents and incidents.

In addition, funding is sometimes provided for programs addressing specific issues such as high-speed rail.
