    Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development (BUILD) Grants, previously known as Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) Grants (FY 2009 – 2020)

    The BUILD program is a U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT)-wide program that provides a unique opportunity for the DOT to invest in road, rail, transit, and port projects that promise to achieve national objectives.   

    Capital Assistance to States – Intercity Passenger Rail Service Program (FY 2008)

    The Capital Assistance to States – Intercity Passenger Rail Service Grant Program provided funding to assist with the cost of capital investments and limited planning activities necessary to support improved intercity passenger rail services.

    Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements Program (FY 2017 – 2020)

    The CRISI program provides funding for capital projects that will improve passenger and freight rail transportation systems in terms of safety, efficiency, or reliability.  

    Federal-State Partnership for State of Good Repair Grant Program (FY 2017 – 2020)

    This program provides funding for eligible capital projects within the United States to repair, replace, or rehabilitate qualified railroad assets to reduce the state of good repair backlog and improve intercity passenger rail performance.

    High-Speed Intercity Passenger Rail Program (HSIPR) (FY 2008 – 2010)

    This program provided funding for long-term high- and higher-speed passenger transport needs in key corridors throughout the country.

    Infrastructure For Rebuilding America (INFRA) Grants  (FY 2017 – 2020), previously known as Fostering Advancements in Shipping and Transportation for the Long-term Achievement of National Efficiencies (FASTLANE) Grant Program (FY 2016)

    The INFRA program is a USDOT-wide program that provides dedicated, discretionary funding for projects that address critical issues facing our nation’s highways and bridges. INFRA grants create opportunities for all levels of government and the private sector to fund infrastructure in innovative ways that improve project delivery and increase accountability.

    Magnetic Levitation Deployment Grants Program (FY 2015, FY 2019, and  FY 2020)

    This program provides funding for the preconstruction planning activities and capital costs of viable, existing Maglev projects.

    Positive Train Control (PTC) Grant Program (FY 2017)

    FRA and the Federal Transit Administration provided FY 2017 Fixing America’s Surface Transportation (FAST) Act funding for the installation of PTC systems to accelerate implementation, increase interoperability, and improve rail reliability and safety through the prevention of train collisions and derailments.

    PTC Systems Grants under the Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements Program (FY 2018)

    The PTC Systems Grants provide funding for the deployment of PTC system technology for intercity passenger rail transportation, freight rail transportation, and/or commuter rail passenger transportation. 

    Rail Line Relocation & Improvement Capital Grant Program (RLR) (FY 2008 – 2011)

    This program provided funding for local rail line relocation and improvement projects that mitigate the adverse effects of rail traffic on safety, motor vehicle traffic flow, community quality of life, or economic development.

    Railroad Rehabilitation & Repair (Disaster Assistance) (FY 2008)

    This program provided funding for necessary expenses to repair and rehabilitate Class II and Class III railroad infrastructure damaged by hurricanes, floods, and other natural disasters in presidentially declared major disaster areas.

    Railroad Safety Grants for the Safe Transportation of Energy Products by Rail Grant Program (FY 2015)

    This program provided funding for public and private railroad grade crossing and track enhancement projects to improve safety on rail routes that transport flammable energy products.

    Railroad Safety Infrastructure Improvement Grant Program (FY 2016)

    This program provided funding for projects involving improvements to railroad infrastructure to increase safety at railroad crossings, train stations, rail yards, overpasses, and tracks across the country.

    Railroad Safety Technology Grants for PTC Program (FY 2010, FY 2014, and FY 2016)

    This program provided funding for projects that implemented a PTC system or benefited overall PTC system implementation on freight, intercity passenger, and commuter railroads.

    Railroad Trespassing Suicide Prevention Grant Program (FY 2019 – 2020)

    This program provides funding for targeted outreach campaigns to reduce the number of railroad-related suicides that involve railroad trespassing. Funding is intended to facilitate thoughtful and consistent collaboration between railroad carriers, communities, law enforcement, educators, and mental health organizations.

    Railroad Trespassing Enforcement Grant Program (FY 2018 – 2020)

    The Railroad Trespassing Enforcement Grant Program provides funding for enforcing railroad-specific laws to reduce rail trespassing incidents and casualties, particularly in areas near railroad trespass hot spots.  

    Restoration and Enhancement Grants Program (FY 2017 – 2020)

    This program provides funding for operating assistance grants for initiating, restoring, or enhancing intercity passenger rail transportation.
