2013 Annual Meeting Highlights

Robert Gatenby

Robert Gatenby
H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute

Robert Gatenby is Chair of the Department of Radiology at the Moffitt Cancer Center in Florida and also the Principle Investigator of the Moffitt Cancer Center PS-OC. He describes the content of the talk he was about to give. Listen Now

Mike Levin

Mike Levin
Tufts University

Mike Levin is a professor of biology at Tufts University near Boston. He aims to control cancer by using electrical gradients across the cell membranes of cells and tissue. Listen Now

Jan Liphardt

Jan Liphardt
Stanford University

Jan Liphardt is an Associate Professor of Bioengineering at Stanford University. He describes the work of the Stanford Physical Sciences-Oncology Center, where he is Principle Investigator. Listen Now

Paul Macklin

Paul Macklin
University Of Southern California

Paul Macklin is a mathematician at the University of Southern California and a member of the USC PS-OC. He develops mathematical and computer models that simulate cancer in individual patients. He explains how he goes about the process. Listen Now

Xiaolin Nan

Xiaolin Nan
Stanford University

Xiaolin Nan, is an assistant professor at Oregon Health and Science University. Until recently, he worked in Dr. Steven Chu's lab doing imaging of single molecules. His background is physical chemistry and after that he trained as a biophysicist , concentrating on cancer biology. Listen Now

Rob Phillips

Rob Phillips
Northwestern University

Rob Phillips is a Professor at Caltech in Pasadena working at the intersection of physics and biology. Over the past12 years he has evolved from being a condensed matter physicist to now concentrating on biophysics. He wants to understand how we can use mathematics and physics to understand biological systems and is co-author of the book 'Physical Biology of the Cell' which came out in 2008. He began by describing why he thinks scientific disciplines should work together. Listen Now

Kenneth Pienta

Kenneth Pienta
Princeton University

Kenneth Pienta is the Donald S. Coffey Professor of Urology and Oncology at Johns Hopkins University. Listen Now

Claudia Fischbach-Teschl

Claudia Fischbach-Teschl
Cornell University

Claudia Fischback-Teschl works at Cornell University in the Department of Biomedical Engineering. She uses engineering approaches to study the micro-environmental control of cancer. One of the PS-OC projects that she directs uses microfabrication approaches to develop culture models to recapitulate some of the micro-environmental conditions that occur in cancer. She also studies the matrix around cancer cells and this is what she spoke about in the conference. Listen Now

Sara Walker

Sara Walker
Arizona State University

Sara Walker works in the School of Life Science and the Beyond Center at Arizona State University. She is also a NASA Astrobiology fellow. She spoke about the deep evolutionary history of life on earth and it's routes to cancer. Listen Now

Val Weaver

Val Weaver
Stanford University

Valarie Weaver is a professor at University of California San Francisco who describes herself as a 'Jack of all trades'. Her research group focuses on how cell context regulates cell fate, which involves looking at the interplay between stemness, mechanics and force in tumors and the tissue surrounding them. Listen Now
