Accessibility

According to the National Household Travel survey, 25.5 million Americans have travel-limiting disabilities.  Transportation is essential to many areas of life such as employment, staying connected with family and friends, and access to healthcare.  The Department of Transportation (DOT) is committed to doing everything possible to raise public awareness about accessibility in transportation, invest in new research, and incentivize the development and deployment of inclusive, affordable new transportation technologies.  Innovations like autonomous vehicles and peer-to-peer service platforms have the potential to transform the lives of people with disabilities through increased mobility. DOT’s accessibility initiatives focus on working with innovators developing these revolutionary new technologies to help create a more inclusive transportation system for everyone.

The three pillars of the Department’s approach to mobility access and inclusion are:

  1. Engage with new vehicle technologies,

  2. Increasing mobility services; and,

  3. Helping to make inclusive transportation options more affordable.

We invite you to learn more about DOT’s accessibility initiatives, engage with the Department, and stay connected to learn about future opportunities.
