Good morning Welcome to Coffee with the with the dean. I'm glad to be back for Friday chats. were were week because for summer we've to a little more intermittent schedule, but I will be back regularly and the times will be posted on this page and also on our Web pages. so be sure tell your friends check in and I hope you're having a great day. Are you. Looking forward to a summer break this year, Good morning, Nice to you again. I know we a lot of familiar faces who come back every week, which is just great. I'm sure many of you are anxiously for classes to start and some of you that are that are in summer or anxiously waiting for classes to be over. I wanna give you a little bit of update on what the is doing with respect to the fall schedule. I know that. You probably are as anxious as I to the final unfortunately we're not there yet because it's kind of a circular process. We have identified the classes that we want to be face to face those are currently the schedule as either class or a a TBD class, and still sorting that out so we are mapping now to. The University has rooms that accommodate right now, the number is 74 percent of the classes that were proposed to be face to face so for those classes that that don't have accommodation. We're looking at some times. We're looking at some blended learning where perhaps half of the students are in the any one time and the are watching online and they alternate. but we will we will that sorted out. It's just that you do it. You look at how that fits and then you come back and you do a little bit more so for now. we anticipate the full schedule being live tenth. That's a later than we had originally hoped to have it. We're looking forward to July first, but unfortunately, it's just kind of a big process. a lot going on in the University to get ready for face-to-face classes. They putting signage hand sanitizers in all the buildings in terms of capacity areas they're working on mapping. So that, for example, if we have a nicely socially Dist in the classroom, then we don't crowd everybody out to to the the same time and undo good we did. We're looking at elevator capacity and perhaps way hallways or stairways again all of that is coming and we'll be in place well before fall classes. Start so the new date to know for sure what's going on is July tenth and beyond that. Again, your advisers are most current source of information, but I want to ask if they that you'd be understanding of the fact that they don't know everything either. In other words, they know what is for sure and all of the stuff that is still work still still them so good morning to velvet to Psychic and to Valerie glad to have you back again. I just love seeing familiar faces. Coming back, so I hope that this is is just one way that we will keep you engaged for your entire time or your child's time at ENT. It's all good. Once again, I hope everybody brought their own coffee because we can get a little bit faster and a little further with a caffeine to help that along back to the question of how advisers can help you what they have been told. And this is my understanding is that any class that is currently listed online is going to stay online. That not mean we might not add a-section or two as we closer to fall if there's additional demand and those new section. Could be face to face or synchronize or a synchronous, but if it's in the schedule, and it says that it's it's intended to stay online. So if you are in a situation where you don't yet feel comfortable coming to campus, your adviser can help you find a fully online schedule and I know that's important to to many of well because you've got make living arrangements. you've got to figure out whether you rent an apartment or you. For semester, and so if you you want the online it's there, we anticipate that most, if not all of of the classes that are as face to face and or TBD will be in that But again, some of those may need to change to blended delivery in order to accommodate all of our students. One thing we have tried to do for those students stage in any major within the College of Business we have. The out a schedule where, at least some of your classes will be face if that's what you want. So you're living in a dorm or you're living in an you can't near campus and undergraduate student, taking 15 credits, then you can that it's likely that the majority of those if you want want that will face to face possibly nine hours with some blended learning, possibly as. 12 one of the things things that undergraduate students in their first two years deal with is so their courses are not in the College of Business, but because many many those are freshman seminar type of class such as the English classes and writing classes, those tend to be smaller and smaller are most likely going to be able to have many face-to-face option. so we think all of our students will be able to. Good choices, I will tell you we are carefully monitoring the schedule. If you are are a student we are still working with Frisco before they make decisions about face-to-face versus online. so that schedule is probably a week or behind the Denton schedule and being finalized because tends to draw its students a little bit later since so, many of them are. Transfers and we that it's likely that many of the students we see this fall will be students who might have thought originally that gonna live in a dorm or living in an apartment and safety reasons they've to stay at home and go to College still take but not have the added or concern about communal living. So we think that may drive some increased enrollment first campus, but again, we're just watching carefully and we'll see what happens. Right now, enrollment in the of Business is higher than it was last fall, which is interesting cuz we were about whether students might just decide to take a gap here or stay home. But the other side of that is it's really early to make projections about that number is we call a point-to-point estimate in other words. if it's twelfth and we look at our enrollment today, we compare it to our. As of June 12 last year, and we know that at this time, many of freshman orientations and most of our transfer have not happened yet and that group of students has not in to the pipeline and since those are new we think that their path might be a little more uncertainty, but we're just not sure you're getting the impression me that this is all kind of vague. Well. Yeah. True, it's not vague. There's a whole lot going on. We're just trying be very careful and not telling you things when we don't really know the final answer and so planning for the social distance seem to take planning for all of the campus changes that we have to undertake in order to things ready for you has been time-consuming problem you cannot address your class for fall Do you mean that can't find your class in registration schedule or you're not able register I the counselor processing process is not open in the fall yet that is a real issue, and we understand that that is issue for our international students so the best advice. I can tell you is even they're not open, they may be taking appointments for the time at which they do open so check regularly on their website also stay in touch with our office scholars, students and scholars in the international Division. They will have have most update that we have about the visa Now, it is the case that if you wish to start classes in fall and you can't get a visa to get here, we will have. Classes that you could take from home country, so that is one possibility that is available to you The other possibility is to if you're Masters student as long as you stay on top of this an appointment. If you can get mid semester, you could start in the second eight week week are very concerned about it well and I had more influence, but that's a government process and we just have to wait and see what. Was Valerie Your son is a transfer student with orientation on July second. at that time, your student will meet with with adviser who will sit down with him virtually I'll have to and walk through his options. What his schedule of classes should look like for point that he is in his curriculum so if he's coming in as a junior, for example, then they will look at the degree. For a major choice if coming in as a sophomore, he doesn't have to choose a a major yet, of those things would happen in the orientation meeting with the adviser and he would register for classes and the ends. he would still of course, be able to come back and revisit that schedule and well, you know I think maybe I don't wanna be an accounting major after all. Maybe I wanna this as a business in integrated studies for now and make that choice lighter, he would still be able to do that. Amer Yes, you're having the same issue with getting a and I am sorry to tell you that we're just all holding our and waiting for that to happen again if you online and make an appointment, then when visa processing reopens you will be earlier in the line and not have to wait as long for for so at least see that, but I would say, check our international students and scholars. Page over the division of international programs and they will advise you as best can, or consider whether you would like to start an online classes. also say you should stay stay in touch with your College of adviser cause a business adviser in Master's office because they be advising you as to paperwork or that you would need if you want to your admission. so if if it becomes likely that you're not gonna get a visa to get here for early fall or. Second eight eight then they defer admission to semester and it can even deferred further if necessary. and we hope that isn't going happen, but it's possible. Valerie you are most welcome. We always want to answer questions at any time if we all your questions today or you think of else you can reach out on our avis website or you can email me through the U N T. Or Department, where your student hopes to be studying we will try to get those questions answered. it looks like counselor services will reopen the end of July in some cases which might be might be enough to get here, It might not be the due date to defer your admission. I believe can done as late as week that classes start so we are. Monitoring that but we we understand the issue and the the time involved so I would can check with your master's program adviser, but it is a question of don't wanna lose you for something. that's your fault. we believe we will be making those referrals available up until the week of classes start and Amy do we have an update on wearing? Is it going to be optional or mandatory? I will tell you that those decisions are still process. It appears from the recent draft of the keep keep a safety video that just reviewed this week that masks would only be in public places or when social Dist and be maintained in other words, if people can stay six feet apart. Then a mask would not be required if they were in close situations. would ask you to wear a mask. We don't intend to make this what I call it a military requirement of police requirement. We're not gonna call the police if somebody doesn't wear a mask, but at the same time we do to keep everybody safe and I know that your daughter probably understands this masks are not the most comfortable thing and I. Enjoy it either At the same is it is also the case that wearing your mask is actually protecting you, but is more protection for people around you. so if you are around people that are high high risk is no doubt concerning to them. If they're around the group that doesn't have masks now, we're gonna give you a good information. We're gonna try to set up the building so that can maintain social distances at all times and we believe as long. Able to do that that will not be mandatory more information will be sent out soon on so keep watching that's being handled by the President's have committees that include staff, administrators and students who are viewing all of the issue is issues now I have been told that UT Austin and Texas, A and M University, both making this mandatory for campus. Of course we are not in their. not necessarily follow the rules, but we are looking very carefully at the data and do understand they're not comfortable. I'm I'm on that, but at same time, what we don't want is your daughter to come here and get sick and then have to turn around and and again. It my understanding for students staying in the dorm that we will quarantine available in case somebody does get sick, which we certainly hope happen. we had very incidents Corona virus positive tests among students. Faculty and staff, I believe the number is maybe people one graduate student a couple of students living off campus. We will will be vigilant about that and again keep you informed scholarship decisions have been made and you have not seen notification a scholarship award and that most likely means you are not awarded a scholarship at this time again the best place. That is our office of financial aid. They tell you you if anything has been added to your account incoming students. if you are awarded a that is done through the process of admission if you are not fully admitted, then scholarship award, if you've got one would not be finalized until such you have completed your admissions paperwork. so that is one possibility. But I continue students have been notified at this if they're receiving a classes with labs classes are likely going to to have lab option so classes in the College of Business that have Labs have labs that have to be done face to face. But biology, for example, will be certainly in a different. Situation and and so there will labs that are open. they will be there will be more of them. They will be smaller, will maintain appropriate so that, for example, are no more than two students to so that they can be at either ends and be and be apart. There are also some lab kits that have been designed those things that could be done remotely. So, for example, if your student is taking a beginning. history class they may get a map in the mail and they may be as to follow along with an instructor whose on video as the instructor demonstrates and the replicates the experience cycle whatever we're doing it is depends on the course but all of them has been examined and very carefully approach and I'm really glad that ah we can help with the answering your questions come back anytime so cafeteria and food services that's another one when we do have some pretty good guidance from the Control and others. we think buffet lines are not thing, so we don't believe gonna be gonna be seeing buffet lines fall for for those who remained campus in housing during spring when we close down and most of the students left the dorms, but some students to remain meals were served in boxes where they were individually prepared by Malo staff and anybody else And so the student was the only one handling them. They their food in a box. I know that there will be box meal services. I expect expect will be other meal services can't quite tell you how that's gonna look because unfortunately that's not not area but I expect if your student is new living in campus housing. They will get information on how that's going work at their orientation if your student. I would say, look at the the student life pages. For information they will post complete updates as they get more information as well. So again, I know that they have paid very close attention to this. I know that food service workers will have regular health screenings and we'll wear and gloves, and I know are not going to put students in Mass food service environments where they're standing in the buffet lines and taking. Their food from common area Dail will there be funds available from Care Care Act I believe that there will, I that there are funds available for summer. We reserved half of the money we received spring for summer have reserved a small amount for fall. We also have some internal funds, but we think there's very strong of another round funding in the next Kelowna virus bill. so we. there will be and we Reserve some. I'm not sure quite how much there will be and how how that will compare to what what was available in spring and fall, But have also put very aggressive fundraising activity with our donors and many of them have up and donated to you and teach student assistance funds for the same kind of assistance. for example, as you probably heard me tell you our. Usn had created a fund for College of Business students for emergencies we're using to supplement when there isn't Cares Act funding available and he has donated a total of of that fund and we're going through it fairly quickly. I will tell you, but other donors have stepped up contributed to the same same fund and are continuing to to The spring session provides scholarship options. The University scholarship application process continuing students takes place only in spring this time so who apply for scholarships do the early February time period, usually the deadline for that is March first, although it can change so you wanna carefully when those open next spring the scholarships for continuing students are awarded at that time, they're. Announced April for the next year for students who who are incoming students who begin with us who are first admitted for Spring those are considered for scholarships at the time of admissions. The the admissions scholarships are for students who start and fall, but there are some that that are specifically set aside for I know that there there are transfer students scholarships for example, that award in spring and summer and there. FTIC awards as well. So thank you Tabitha for posting the the fund that is is for any experiencing an emergency and that can be a Corona virus. related emergency or anything else you lost your job. your your car broke down. You an unexpected medical bill. goal is keep students in school. don't want something that we could with to derail your academic career and mister McNatt. Focus on that as he was a working student who was married with a a child, and he understands well exactly exactly the difficulties that balancing, work and school and perhaps family family and responsibilities and trying to get through on time. are greatly appreciative his generosity and the other donors who have contributed to that fund and I wanted to tell you I think think this just a wonderful story our some of our students in the. For group, is the Association for Latina Latino professionals in the major donated the proceeds from their fund raiser to fund, so it is really heartwarming to see our continuing students make the statement that they wanna see all of you get successfully and provide whatever they can to help you meet your financial needs. Excuse I talk a lot during this hour, hour, so I need coffee to my voice going other questions out there that can answer any new faces that haven't come to our chapter this time. I know that graduation real loss for us, not to be able to that ceremony and we were hoping that we have it in August, but unfortunately we are in a situation where we are holding large events for groups of students who just don't feel that we can can safely that. so we will have an August graduation ceremony, but I believe the survey has gone out from the President's office to ask those of. Who were supposed to graduate what you did graduate, supposed to have your graduation ceremony in spring and weren't able to do asking for your preferences as to what you might like to do next. And I you will fill that out. We did have our video for those students who participated and sent us clip or a photo that we could include. we'll continue to do things like that to keep us connected. I know it's not the same. The we're on video. I you know in this kind of video. I can't even see your faces at least in the zoom chat. I can see who are, but we are all in this together. We're all trying to stay connected. We are all reaching out. And just that we still remain family in the College of business. That's how I think of us and that's how I want you to think us. You have joined family. We care about your success. We are here to do whatever we can that and we care about where you're going and what you do after you graduate and we want you to stay in touch. You are Omar. I think she joins our chats week. Tabitha Our events planner at Tabitha doesn't have nearly as much fun right now as usually does because she's not getting the plan many parties, but we know that the time will come when parties back when will tuition for for fall will be do tuition is normally do. Sometime after you register, But before classes usually before the first class day unless opted in to a payment plan, those due dates posted on the registrar's Web page and I apologize apologize for knowing the answer to your question. I don't know if you can take a quick look at that and let me know that would be great or if not we will try to respond to you next time but If apply for payment plan, then you are eligible to pay a small amount of your tuition and then pay it over the semester and that's a simple application and that's automatically granted. I know that for spring and summer, waved late fees on and we did we could to reach out to keep people in classes so they didn't get dropped If you will stay in touch with the registrar's Web page that that can you and if we can that information, we'll post, I post, I don't know the current deadlines are. I'm sorry sorry you and if you need defer your enrollment, you can reach out to the graduate programs right now and you can you can talk them about the deferral that is not a problem they would be happy to help. that, but I don't normally admission scholarships require an application from the Those are So if you're a continuing student, then yes, you do have to through the portal to your graduate adviser call make an appointment with the graduate program Office for a chat or just reach out on their Web and are happy to help explain that process to you. Let you know. It is a case of you need to feel something out or didn't or you just were not awarded scholarship and they can provide you very complete helpful information and also discuss the options with you and again we are happy to help. However, we can and making aware of opportunities that are out there. if you didn't find one second our recruiters internships now, yes, some recruiters are most of those internships are virtual and we also have Internships on our to Career Center website that that are virtual that are not through direct recruiters are through an that works with with us for a credit internships in the College business generally require that they be paid internships, but I think there many paid internships still available out there. as many as there were, but there are some employers even though they. Looking at times right, this minute expect that that will come back and they therefore be hiring interns because that's such an important hiring 51 for them. They wanna get to know you only then many of our get permanent offers for a long that placement, Brock you just to an adviser, Are you making the the GRE for spring? 2021 three point? Oh or three. We do have that waiver in place for fall. have not yet made a for spring and reason is GRE now offers at-home testing, but we don't have enough confidence in that know whether it's a reliable test, we don't know whether students will score higher or students will score lower. and if and if it's not gonna useful to us, we think that it's fair metric to use. We hope to make the decision about fall by the time classes start in August. Watch the Web page for more updates kinda just depends on how things go go forward. also just in all candor will be okay well if they're voting on it this that will certainly be up by fall. That's correct. an issue that goes to our Master's and that is a faculty Committee. One of the things they're looking at is they'll go and review the test data. That's come out on the at-home test, but they'll also look at the performance of the students who us in summer and see whether they notice. Difference. My is it's possible that we will waive it, but I think to wait for the vote on that to see and one of the reasons we use the GRE and GMAT is it it is our have every student student who us successfully complete the program. Sometimes it is difficult to for students who's major wasn't business, example, whether they have the specific skills that will make them move quickly and smoothly through the The courses they wanna take or whether they're gonna gonna need additional preparation. at at the same time we don't wanna put unnecessary roadblocks If it's not a good then I don't think it's worth so we will continue to look at closely and it's the vote is this week Then should know by next next so so thank you. Oh you're so welcome. I am just happy to hear from our students and our parents at any time and that's. We're here we all had and unforeseen challenges in spring and summer that I don't think any of us thought we would see in our lifetimes, but we rise stronger and we are looking to providing the strong education that we have always been committed to and launching successfully on their business careers after their time with us. Honestly, we much from the spring situation that it's to be. I think something that makes us even stronger going forward, Many of our faculty who had never taught online the struggle candidly to get things done in the spring. and of course we have only a week to prepare, but now we've had a lot of time to prepare and we've learned that some things actually may better if we put them on canvas and give the students more time to review them and then ask questions afterwards. Really need face to face and and we've done some and identified some classes and said this is just not gonna work as well. unless we're we're classroom and we've also I learned even more that our students want choices and to the degree that we can. We wanna give you those choices. I think in our graduate programs, we've had more experience for for a time because had been offering the online program a while, and we do. I think a really good job with that. That's highly-ranked program that we're very proud of but we found. Many of our students did not want to be online or face-to-face exclusively. wanted to blend and I think so why the graduate students are finding that out as well, particularly as they get to later stages their career, so they might want three classes Face-to-face, particularly those where they think they need direct interaction and they may want a couple more online they get flexibility or they they accommodate a part-time job or because frankly, they think something's very comfortable. Easy and I just wanna get through it quickly, are to offering those choices as much as we possibly can we are also looking at this is a discussion. It's not gonna be be something we're fall, but we're looking the idea of the lifelong learner more strongly and that some of our may complete a degree may start a career and then they find that they. Some additional tools or want some updating or some training, and we're looking at ways that we can keep our graduates engaged with continuing education in the future. And for example, I know that analytics is a hot topic right now and coding is another hot topic and many of our students didn't major in in either of those things and don't wanna go back and and get degree, but they might like a little more exposure. They might like a few more tools as they look at their job opportunities we are looking. Ways that we provide that refresh and continuing activity at nominal cost or even free in some cases and one of the ways we're looking at that is through our partnership with Kyra, you may or may not but selected you NTAs their provider for for education in their framework on platform in the US and so. We can we are offering a couple would but also concentrations that are related through the Corsa platform Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences, and that is something that we can we can do do it low cost and students can take many of those core classes for free and so we're thinking. Maybe that's a good way that we can you that continue in education that you want and brought to your question deadline to apply for grad school for spring of 2020. - one right now we are on a admissions process, so there is no deadline. I will will tell you that the sooner you complete your application. the more likely you are to number one a spot because we are getting much more crowded Has really taken off and we have a lot more applicants than we used to and so we're debating taking that application and putting some deadlines on it in order to guarantee spaces for students. I can tell you tell you that you apply by March first you will absolutely have no problem problem if you apply later and we do that we can't accommodate more students that would be something. Concerned about and I'm sorry, said Spring 2020 - one not Fall 2020 - for spring 2020 - one as long you apply by November, you should be fine. I do wanna make you aware if you're a current undergraduate student, you could talk the graduate program's about condition of you could actually take one or two graduate classes and count those toward your undergraduate degree in your graduate degree, which is a Major and your schedule, so I will give the graduate admissions Office a call or shoot them email and ask about whether that option is something you might be interested in or be able to take advantage of cuz it is definitely a cost-effective way to start to graduate, but it's also great way to see how you like graduate classes and whether you feel ready and how. Gonna work for and whether you want consider alternative choices programs and majors graduate school, I will when the the job is difficult and it's tight, we find many use that as an opportunity to say, say, I'm just gonna stick around and get a degree you can polish polish off credentials. you can come in with a jump start to your career at a higher level if the job opportunity that you're hoping for isn't Visible right now, so just something to think about. For those of you that may want face-to-face appointment we are opening for those on July six, so you would be to make an appointment to come in and see an an adviser at time up until that point we are working exclusively with online appointments, but also on on as we go forward from that day, we will offer online appointments because a lot of students have found that that's easy and convenient way to do it. So you'll have that. Spa July six to either come to campus or to do an online appointment that's entirely up to you. as probably know if you are an are an incoming student orientations for the summer all scheduled to be in format. We're not offering those in in a face-to-face format right now, and I don't expect that change. I'll also tell you that while we will have activities. semester starts, we not planning to schedule any large events during fall semester and I know that's a little bit disappointing. We had things that were planned in our sport management program that we just can't do because we don't feel that it's safe and is above all the thing that we wanna keep forefront but at the same time they will be doing other things and so those these times will. And we will be back full face to face mode when we believe it's safe to do that student clubs may still meet face-to-face depending on their size, but they will still be active. They'll still have things going on again stay tuned that will look and what will be able to tell you. Does anybody in summer school right We had a record summer enrollment. The business was up almost 15 percent in somewhere enrollment from last summer, which is kind of a surprise to us. I don't know if it's that it was all online and that was convenient for students that we're working that otherwise might not taken courses or students that haven't yet been able to start a job or internships but We really feel like we're glad to have great set of students coming in and say some school has has the advantage if you're a continuing student in the undergraduate can be lower cost to you, on which tuition plan you in fairly significantly lower cost, and it also be a great way to get ahead and get through faster and to have to take a lower course load in a future. If you have difficult courses that you wanna have additional for second, have financial have finance grads been recruited recruited in funds and yes, they have we that we know, for example, Goldman Sachs creates for us with us for some our We have year CFA program exams, students can take that level one exam and that's a pipeline into funds. We have several hedge funds in this area that are. Of investments advisory board that work with finance Department and they do our So stay in not only with your graduate adviser, but also with the career Center and adviser and the the finance that's the path that you're looking for Brock, adviser told you to either apply after classes or after fall to GPA and so and you ask. Taking during your your last well, I'll two about about you're not a business major, you're you're right, they can't count on as as an upper level elective for media arts because that's not our program. So I'm sorry about that in a different College makes that a little bit different proposition. If you were an undergraduate business student, you could if you took Summer classes to improve your GPA, That's always a good thing do and if you are borderline, use holistic admission so the adviser may tell tell you that you do take a Gmat or GRE. If you're a grades aren't quite what they should be or they may consider an interview and a further discussion with you so will look at everything you're doing certainly if. 2020, - one and you want the benefit of the doubt to bring your GPA up. can wait wait longer and we will consider you and I I think that be a problem just just stay in touch the advising office. Melanie your son's currently doing the online freshman orientation. Well, I'm glad that's going well and he will be able to register for classes at the end of the orientation period with the help of Valerie, Where do you look for jobs for summer? There are some on-campus jobs, not as many because, for example, in the College of Business, Our computer lab is closed for summer because we're not teaching face-to-face and we created virtual labs. However, the lab will be open in fall and you can through the Career Center for the handshake for on-campus jobs or you can apply. With the the Department for those on-campus jobs, so anything is available now should be posted handshake as as an on-campus job. It is also great to your application in early because things will to open up. so you're just gonna gonna need to watch that we anticipate a fairly spectrum of jobs in the fall. Some of that depends if we end up with. Every dorr open, there may be fewer jobs in food services or resident halls. don't anticipate that being being that's really gonna gonna on. what student choices we see, but I will say that right now, the plan is the dorms to be open. The rooms will be to two people. We won't have any the three person room sets operating there will be a quarantine space for students who who are living dorm, either part of the dorm or all of the dorm. We've also booked.
