Summer Orientation 2020 Testing

TAMS Summer Orientation includes placement testing for chemistry and mathematics enrollment. Students will take a chemistry placement exam and those results will determine whether or not a student takes General Chemistry or Honors Chemistry. (Note: A student who places into Honors Chemistry can elect to take General Chemistry as long as they notify Cynthia.Hoffman@unt.edu by July 15.) Likewise, students will take at least one math placement test, which will determine if a student places into Precalculus or Calculus I. Students who think they possess advanced math skills can elect to take a second math placement test that will determine if they place into Calculus I or Calculus II. Students who score well enough on these exams may be invited to take a third math placement test to see if they qualify to enroll in math courses above Calculus II. All math placement exams will be taken online and scored by the Department of Mathematics at UNT. The math faculty will then inform TAMS of math placement results. Math placement is final (regardless of courses a student completed in high school or via dual credit or AP/IB/CLEP test results) unless a student requests to start in a lower course than the one into which they were placed.

Summer Orientation 2020 Testing Schedule

  1. Precalculus/Calculus I placement test = Monday, June 8th, 10:00 – 11:30 a.m. (No calculators permitted)
  2. Calculus I/Calculus II placement test = Tuesday, June 9th, 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. (Non-graphing calculator permitted excluding TI-83 and TI-84)
  3. Calculus III or higher placement test = We will invite eligible students once TAMS analyzes scores from previous math placement tests.
  4. Chemistry/Honors Chemistry placement test = Wednesday, June 10th, 10:00 – 11:50 a.m. (Non-programmable calculator permitted)

Please note: Students are not required to take any of the placement tests.  In fact, students who have not taken a precalculus course should not take the math placement test.  Students who decide this option should notify Ms. Cynthia Hoffman via email Cynthia.Hoffman@unt.edu so that TAMS has a record of a student’s decision.  Likewise, a student can elect to take only one of the placement tests.  Again, please notify Ms. Hoffman of your decision.  Students who do not take a placement test will be enrolled in Precalculus and General Chemistry 1.

Students admitted after the placement test dates will have an opportunity to take the first math placement test and the Chemistry placement test.  A date and time will be arranged.

TAMS relies on UNT’s Department of Mathematics and Department of Chemistry to develop, administer, and score the placement tests, and to analyze students’ scores for the purpose of student enrollment in the appropriate course.  TAMS/UNT do not include courses a student has completed in high school or via dual credit or correspondence when determining a student’s enrollment in math and chemistry.  Remember, student learning and success is paramount, so we do not want to enroll a student in a course for which the student is unprepared.

TAMS will re-consider a student’s math placement if a student does not place into Calculus 1 but has (a) a score of 5 on the AP Calculus AB/BC exam, AND (b) an SAT Math score of 750+ OR an ACT Composite score of 32+ with a math section score of 34+.  If the latter conditions apply, TAMS will allow the student to enroll in Calculus I.
