Space Heaters on Campus

Winter weather is upon us! For those who are currently working on campus or who have plans to come back to the office early next semester that means you’ll want it to be warm inside while it’s cold outside.

We are preparing to transition UNT buildings to heat mode. We are checking our boilers and furnaces to make sure they are ready for the season and are operating safely and efficiently. Following the university’s utilities conservation policy, we are also adjusting our temperature controls to stay at 70 degrees.

We constantly monitor our building’s performance and make adjustments as needed, but we understand that sometimes certain parts of a building can feel much colder and need further attention. If you are having heating issues in your space, please call us at 940-565-2700 and let us know so we can start taking action.

We also understand that space heaters do a good job at quickly warming up a space and are popular both at home and on campus this time of year. However, before you bring a space heater on campus please let our technicians address the heating issue and work toward a solution. While space heaters provide quick comfort, they can create an imbalance in the building’s temperature causing the building’s heating system to not work properly across all spaces.

If our technicians are unable to help regulate your office temperature, there are a couple of things you need to do before you bring a space heater to campus. First, all space heaters on campus must meet certain minimum requirements and get approval from the Risk Management department for use on campus. Second, there are certain rules for how you use the space heater, too. These requirements will prevent fires or electricity overloads that may impact the computers or equipment in your area.

Prior to bringing a space heater, please contact the Emergency Management and Safety Services team at 940-565-2109 or Emergency.Management@unt.edu

Working together, our Facilities team and our partners at Emergency Management and Safety Services want to ensure you have a safe and warm place to work this winter!
