At Denison UCC, 71 fire watch volunteers help homeless center remain open

After it was slapped with a Fire Department cease use order on Christmas Eve, the homeless center run by the Metanoia Project at Denison Avenue United Church of Christ was in danger of closing. To remain open during appeal, it had to initiate a proper fire watch. The call went out for volunteers. So far, 71 are signed up. Their vigilance allows the unsheltered homeless to spend each night in warmth.

A surprise fire inspection after midnight at the Denison Avenue United Church of Christ confirmed that a fire watch at the Metanoia Project shelter there has been implemented as the church appeals a cease and desist order. The inspection came hours after homeless advocates rallied at a Cleveland City Council meeting to save the shelter and compel the city to implement a comprehensive cold weather plan for the homeless.
