The string area at the University of North Texas is one of the most comprehensive string programs in the world. In addition to offering traditional classical instruction in all areas, UNT hosts the largest early music program in the United States and now offers instruction in Jazz/Crossover Strings. Other pertinent offerings include full-tuition undergraduate and graduate string quartets, new music ensemble Nova, string pedagogy and entrepreneurship classes.

String students from UNT have achieved success in all aspects of the profession, winning 3 Grammys, an Oscar and many major competitions (Paganini, Fischoff, ISB, ASTA). Our former students hold concertmaster, principal and section positions in leading US orchestras (including National, Pittsburgh, Dallas, Baltimore, Utah, Chicago Lyric Opera) and a vast array of international orchestras. They also perform in many string quartets and alternative styles ensembles (Mannheim Steamroller, Snarky Puppy) as well as major teaching and leadership positions throughout the world.

In addition to the comprehensive offerings at UNT, string students perform in 22 well-paying professional orchestras in the broad Dallas-Ft. Worth cultural region. They also earn extra income and hone their teaching skills through many teaching fellowships and assistantships in the String Area, the UNT String Project and from private teaching in public schools in the region.
