OUR STORY

At UNT Dining Services, “It’s About the Food.”

We deliver great-tasting food, made fresh daily from whole ingredients at our on-campus kitchens. UNT Dining is the largest self-supported food service department in North Texas. With our 23 retail food shops, five dining halls, upscale dining restaurant, bakery, and catering department, we serve nearly 5 million meals annually. As the largest employer on campus, Dining Services provides resume-building job opportunities to nearly 1,100 student employees. UNT is recognized as a leader in vegan dining on college campuses. Thanks to the overwhelming success of Mean Greens Café, the nation’s first all-vegan collegiate dining hall, UNT has earned an A+ rating and Dean’s List status on peta2’s Vegan Report Card for five consecutive years (2014-18). Our award-winning food service program is regularly featured in such trade publications as Food Management and FoodService Director magazines. We are also the recipient of the prestigious Loyal E. Horton Award from the National Association of College and University Food Services.

We also take matters of waste and sustainability very seriously. We cook from scratch, which reduces packaging waste. We grow our own leafy greens for Mean Greens and other locations in Mean Greens Acres — our organic, hydroponic, non-GMO farm on campus. We've also eliminated trays from our dining halls so we've cut down on our water use. We have a prime vendor, which increases efficiency and drastically reduces the amount of trucks making deliveries to campus. We've made straws available by "request only" in some retail operations. And, in contrast to food service contractors, UNT Dining is a truly local enterprise. Our entire staff lives in the area, we make sure our food sources are as local as possible, and our resources go right back into benefiting the UNT community. We don't just serve UNT, we are UNT and that affinity affects everything we do.

For the fifth consecutive year, the University of North Texas has earned an “A+” rating as well as Dean’s List status from peta2. Thanks in large part to the success of Mean Greens Café, UNT continues to be recognized as one of the nation’s leaders in plant-based dining and stands out even more in a state where the average rating is “B”. Just 193 schools out of 1,509 nationwide received the Dean’s List honor. To learn more, go to Peta2 Vegan College Ranking.
