Dr. Elizabeth Chappell: Dr. Chappell continues to oversee the UNT String Project, which enrolls over 130 children each semester and over 100 students in the summer. The string music education students gain authentic teaching experience by participating in this program, and as a supplement to their education the string music education students attended the national conference of the American String Teachers Association (ASTA). In 2016 and 2017, Dr. Chappell presented sessions at the Texas Music Educators Association Conference (TMEA), the American String Teachers Association Conference (ASTA), and the Texas Orchestra Directors Association Conference (TODA). Dr. Chappell was also elected to the board of the National String Project Consortium.
Dr. Donna Emmanuel: Dr. Emmanuel presented two papers on the topic of Community Engagement at the College Music Society National Conference (CMS) in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and she also gave a presentation at the Annual Meeting for the National Association of Schools of Music. Dr. Emmanuel serves as the CMS Chair for the Committee on Community Engagement, and she is also serving as the National Program Chair for the CMS National Conference, to be held in San Antonio in November, 2017.
Dr. Warren Henry: Dr. Henry currently serves as the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. Each fall, he leads a study abroad trip to either Austria or Hungary, which is part of a course that he co-teaches with Dr. Emmanuel. In 2018, the students will travel to Budapest, Hungary, which will include two days of workshops at the Kodály Institute (Kécskémét).
Dr. Jamey Kelley: Prior to joining the UNT faculty in 2017, Dr. Kelley served as Assistant Professor of Music Education at Florida International University in Miami, Florida. In 2016-2017, he published two research studies in the Journal of Research in Music Education; the topics included comparisons between music programs in charter and neighborhoods schools and an examination of what factors lead to continued participation in elective music. Recently, two additional studies of his were published in Research Perspectives on Music Education and the International Journal of Community Music. Over the past two years, Dr. Kelley has presented his research at national and international conferences including the International Society for Music Education Symposium (ISME), Society of Music Perception and Cognition (SMPC), American Education Researchers Association (AERA), the LGBTQ Studies and Music Education Symposium, and the National Association of Music Education Conference (NAfME).
Dr. Jessica Nápoles: Dr. Nápoles joined the Division of Music Education in 2017. Prior to joining the faculty, Dr. Nápoles served as Associate Professor of Choral Music Education at the University of Utah School of Music. Dr. Nápoles serves on the editorial boards for the Journal of Research in Music Education (the premier research journal in the field) and the International Journal of Research in Choral Singing. Recently, she conducted the California All State Chorus, the Western Division ACDA Honor Choir, and the Maine All State Chorus. Recent publications include: Effects of applause magnitude and musical style on listeners’ evaluations of choral performance (International Journal of Music Education) and Effects of pre-tuning vocalization behaviors on the tuning accuracy of college instrumentalists (Journal of Research in Music Education). Nápoles is serving as Assistant Conference Chair for the 2019 national ACDA conference in Kansas City, Missouri.
Dr. Sean Powell: During the 2017-2018 academic year, Dr. Powell presented research at the Symposium on Music Teacher Education (2 papers)(Minneapolis), the National Association for Music Education Music Research and Teacher Education National Conference(2 papers) (Atlanta), the American Educational Research Association Annual Meeting(New York City), the International Conference on Narrative Inquiry in Music Education (2 papers) (Boston), and the International Society for Music Education Policy Seminar (Munich, Germany). His paper, “Structure and Agency in Novice Music Teaching” was published by the journal Research Studies in Music Education, and his book chapters in The Oxford Handbook of Music Teacher Education in the United States and Listening to Voices Seldom Heard: Perspectives and Narratives in Music Educationare forthcoming.
Dr. Darhyl Ramsey: Dr. Ramsey continues to coordinate the Start Up the Band program, which is designed to provide band instruments and instruction to students in Denton ISD who might otherwise not be able to afford to participate in school band programs. The program recently received a $1,500 grant from the Greater Denton Arts Council and approximately $10,000 of in-kind donations from Music and Arts Corp., Denton ISD, and Pender’s Music Company. In 2017, Dr. Ramsey received the UNT Robert J. Rogers Community Service Award, which is given by the Office of the President to a person who has made a significant impact on the community.
Dr. Debbie Rohwer: Dr. Rohwer was appointed as Lead Editor from 2014-2020 for the research journal, Update: Applications of Research in Music Education. In 2018, Dr. Rohwer published two research studies in the International Journal of Community Music and Texas Music Education Research, three editorials and one Research-to-Resource article in Update, as well as giving presentations at the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) and the National Association for Music Education (NAfME). Dr. Rohwer was named Regents Professor and received the Bob Rogers Service and Community Engagement award in 2018.
Dr. Don Taylor: Dr. Taylor serves as the coordinator for PhD Studies in Music Education and teaches courses in elementary general music education. Recent publications include the following: "LGBTQ Music Education: External Mentoring between Student Teachers and In-Service Teachers (Bulletin of the Council for Music Education), "Dignity for All: LGBTQ Students and Empathic Teaching" (Update: Applications of Research in Music Education), and "Zeke’s Story: Intersections of Faith, Vocation, and LGBTQ Identity in the South (Book Chapter in Marginalized Voices in Music Education)." He has also presented his work at the National Association for Music Education National Conference, the Society for Music Teacher Education National Conference, and the Texas Music Educators Association Annual Conference.
