What is a citizen volunteer in Police Service:

A citizen volunteer in police service is a member of the community who provides support services to a law enforcement agency without monetary benefit. Services typically include community outreach, telephone work, research, and other administrative tasks.

Job Description:

This is a volunteer position. Volunteers assigned to this classification work under minimum supervision. This means that definite work objectives are set for the volunteer but methods of performing tasks are frequently left to the judgment of the volunteer with occasional instructions or advice provided by the coordinator.

Responsibilities include:​

-Greet and welcome students, faculty/staff, guests
-Providing directions to students, faculty/staff, guests
-Answering students, faculty/staff, guests inquiries
-Patrolling buildings
-Maintain the premises clean and organized
-Providing traffic/crowd control during special events
-Shuttling students, faculty/staff, guests to campus destinations
-Working the Welcome Center monitoring surveillance cameras
-Assisting in door unlocks
-Answering incoming calls
 

An example may include volunteers helping new students, faculty/staff, and guests navigate the campus. Volunteers may also be the source of information about activities going on campus and are able to direct people to the right location or person to answer more in-depth questions.

Who can volunteer:

Citizens of almost any background who are over the age of 18 can volunteer.

Minimum Qualifications:

-All volunteers are required to complete a background check and attend orientation
-All volunteers are required to have a valid driver’s license
-All volunteers are required to have a high school diploma
-Ability to comprehend and follow oral and written instructions accurately
-Good interpersonal skills and ease in relating to people from varying education, cultural and social backgrounds
-Demonstrates good communication skills
-Ability to learn assigned tasks
-Customer service oriented
-Responsible, reliable, and punctual
 

Physical requirements necessary to perform essential job functions:

While some volunteers have a place to sit, work requires muscular exertion and/or physical strain such as standing for long periods of time, recurring bending, or recurring lifting of items weighing up to 25 pounds.

Driving university vehicles:

On some occasions volunteers will be utilizing the department shuttles to escort students, faculty/staff, and guests to campus destinations.

Work schedule:

Volunteers will be scheduled upon their availability. A coordinator will work with volunteers to set a schedule.
