North Texas Falls 4-3 To Memphis

DENTON -- The North Texas women's tennis team lost another 4-3 heartbreaker on Saturday afternoon, this time to Memphis. It's the Mean Green's third 4-3 loss in their last four matches.

After winning the doubles point and a back-and forth-singles competition that saw splitting action on every court, the Mean Green (7-6) looked towards freshman Kexuan Zhou to seal the deal. Playing at the No. 5 position, Zhou showed incredible resiliency all day and forced her Tigers (7-4) opponent to a third-set tiebreak. Unfortunately, Memphis would come away with a 7-2 victory in the tie break to clinch the match.

"We are disappointed we could not close out the match," said head coach Sujay Lama. "However, it's important we look at the positives. These women fought their hearts out and yet again put us in a position to win."

The day got started off well for North Texas as they pulled out a close and gritty doubles point victory.

"The effort they put in to win the doubles point was amazing," Lama said.

After the doubles victory, the Mean Green had to make a comeback as Memphis took a 2-1 lead.

Freshman Hala Khaled Badwy tied it up with a straight set victory at No. 4 but then again UNT had to make a comeback as it faced match point. Trailing 3-2 in the overall score, Alexandra Heczey came to the rescue with a dominating third set victory/ The savvy veteran pulled out the 6-4 third set win to tie the match at 3-3 and put all eyes on court five where Zhou stood.

After a disappointing first set, Zhou was resilient in her second set. She fought all the way back to win the second set 6-1 and force a third set. With the match on the line, Zhou would once again be resilient. The freshman trailed in the third set by as much as 4-1 but quickly worked her way back to a 5-4 deficit.

Trailing 5-4 in the third set, Zhou again showed resiliency as she saved triple match point and then went up 6-5. However Memphis would win the tiebreak 7-2.

"These are growing pains for us but there is no doubt these experiences are going to help us down the road and especially for the conference championships," Lama said. "The key is we continue to keep our heads up and enjoy the work we are putting in every single day. We have no doubt the results will come."
