COVID-19 Housing and Dining Info

UNT's Coronavirus (COVID-19) Updates can be found at https://healthalerts.unt.edu/

Please use the UNT Student Financial Services Housing & Dining Credits FAQ page to assist with further understanding the Spring 2020 credit process.

4/7/2020 update

Housing previously provided a sign-up schedule for students checking out of the residence halls through 4/3/2020.  As the number of remaining students to check out has reduced, continuing to sign up for a scheduled time is not necessary to maintain social distancing guidelines.

Students still needing to retrieve their belongings and check-out of their room can arrive on campus at any time to complete the process.

4/1/2020 update

Housing continues to remain open for students to complete their move-out.

Residents, that have not already, can return to campus at any time to retrieve their belongings and return their room key.

Students returning to campus to move-out are encouraged to follow social distancing guideline while in the residence halls.  Practices to increase public cleaning and minimize direct contact with staff are in place to mitigate exposure.

What if...

I’ve moved out but still have my key?
I need someone else to come get my belongings from campus?

3/31/2020 update

Room consolidation of Santa Fe and Traditions residents remaining on campus for spring 2020.

To effectively serve and mitigate COVID exposure for continuing campus residents, UNT Housing and Residence Life will count on patience and adaptability from all Santa Fe and Traditions residents to make a transition as we initiate room consolidation efforts.

Housing & Residence Life is preparing clean, vacant rooms in Kerr Hall to receive residents from Santa Fe Square and Traditions Hall.  Consolidation room assignments will provide a private double occupancy with a suite bathroom to support social distancing guidelines.

Current residents of Santa Fe and Traditions should log in to eHousing with this link to provide their on-campus housing intent for the Summer 2020 housing term

Boxes and packing supplies will be made available at the Traditions front desk ASAP.  Additionally, Housing and Residence Life staff will provide moving assistance from 9 AM to 4 PM daily, from Wednesday, April 1st through Monday, April 6th

Residents are required to complete their consolidation move by 4 PM on Monday, April 6th

Room consolidation for Santa Fe Square and Traditions Hall will allow for the buildings be transitioned for use by essential personnel from UNT, Denton and other external agencies.

3/24/2020 Update

As Denton County has issued a ‘stay at home’ order to go in to effect at 11:59 PM on Wednesday, 3/25/2020, UNT Housing is taking further steps in support of the health and safety of the campus community.

Only residents that have responded to indicate “I will continue to stay on campus for the Spring 2020 semester” through eHousing will retain ID card access to the residence halls.  All other spring 2020 residents, including those that have not responded, will have access revoked as of 3/26/2020.  IDs will remain active for other University services, with the exception of residence hall access at this point.

Until further notice, residents should not have guests or visitors. This is in line with recommended social distancing practices as prevention to help reduce the spread of COVID-19.

3/20/2020 Update
We have been actively listening to our community as we navigate this rapidly evolving global health crisis and have made the following decisions.

Residence Halls and Dining Services will remain open for those who choose to stay in their residence hall to complete their course work remotely for the remainder of the semester. We understand some of our students have nowhere else to go at this time, and we continue to find ways to increase social distancing and implement additional deep cleaning measures.

Beginning March 23, students may choose to leave university housing and complete their coursework elsewhere.  Those that do will be given a prorated housing refund based on their move-out date. Spring 2020 Dining meal plan credits will be calculated and applied in the near future.

UNT Student Financial Services has provided a Housing & Dining Credits FAQ page to assist with further understanding the Spring 2020 credit process.

What do you need to do?

Current residents have been sent an email with a link to eHousing to the COVID-19 Housing Status Update Form to indicate their intent.

Students can link to the form COVID-19 Housing Status Update Form here.

The intent form asks students to select from one of three options:
1.    I have already moved out
2.    I plan to move out of my room by Express Checkout
3.    I will continue to stay on campus for the spring 2020 semester.

Students moving out are asked to complete an EXPRESS CHECKOUT from Housing.
1.    Remove all of your belongings from room
2.    Remove trash to dumpsters
3.    DO NOT CLEAN
4.    Return your room key to the front desk - follow the posted instructions

For specific questions regarding your housing or dining account, please call 940-565-2610 during regular business hours, Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM.

For general questions and concerns related to the UNT COVID-19 response plan, please reach out to the Parent and Family Hotline at 844-366-5892 Monday to Friday from 8 AM to 8 PM and 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, Saturday and Sunday.

Please accept our thanks for your understanding as we continue to navigate this unprecedented time with what is best for our students’ academic success and future graduation from UNT.

These FAQs may help with additional understanding for specific situations:

I already moved out but didn’t checkout.  What should I do?

If you've already removed all of your belongings from your room but did not check out with staff, please return your room key to Housing.  You can return to campus and drop the key at the front desk of your residence hall or return the key by mail.  If you return your key by mail, please send the key in a padded envelope that includes paper with your name, student ID#, and Building/Room # to the following address:

UNT Housing
1155 Union Circle #311310
Denton, TX 76203-5017

What if I can’t return to campus to check out of my room?

Students that are unable to return to campus to complete the EXPRESS CHECKOUT can coordinate with Housing to send a proxy to complete their move-out.  To do so:

  1. The student should send an email to housinginfo@unt.edu that includes the student’s name, student ID# and name of the proxy.
  2. Housing Assignments Office will confirm the student’s room assignment and forward the notice to the appropriate staff at the residence hall.  The student will be included in the message as confirmation of the proxy request being relayed.
  3. The proxy can arrive on campus to remove belongings between 9 AM and 3 PM, Monday through Friday, to be provided access to the room by residence hall staff.
  4. Students, as possible, pass their key on to the proxy to be returned to the front desk.
  5. The proxy will complete the key return at the front desk once belongings are removed from the room via the EXPRESS CHECKOUT process.

For students remaining on campus, which dining halls and retail restaurants will be open?

www.dining.unt.edu/hours  is the best source for dining hours of operation.

Stay connected to the Dining website frequently as hours may be modified as university plans are announced.

If I’m considering on-campus housing for a future term, can I receive a tour of the residence halls?

UNT Housing will not be able to offer tours of the residence halls until further notice.  Please browse our website for housing rates, residence hall amenities, and the 2020-2021 Housing License Agreement Terms and Conditions.

What are Housing and Dining doing to reduce the spread of germs?

Housing Custodial staff are disinfecting touchable surfaces in public areas of the residence halls twice a day, including: hand rails, door knobs, stair rails, elevator buttons, water fountains, floor/wing community bathrooms, hand dryers, toilet paper dispensers, paper towel dispensers, soap dispensers, toilet stall doors, lobby/front desk counter tops, public office trashcans and recycle cans, pianos, music stands, table tops, study rooms, music practice rooms.

To increase the safety of guests and employees, Dining services has adjusted service styles in the dining halls, retail and catering locations by reducing or elimitaing personal contact by modifying salad bars, flatware dispensers, condiment dispenser pumps and bottles, etc. Dining has also increased the frequency and stringency of their already-strict sanitizing protocols.

Assignment Queue info for Fall 2020/Spring 2021 application

Assignment Queue for 20/21 returning and transfer student applications is available

As of Thursday, February 27th, UNT Housing has transitioned to an Assignment Queue for returning and transfer upperclassman student housing applications.

On that date, any incomplete returning upperclassmen applications were purged from the system to allow a fresh start within the AQ process.  Notification were sent to students whose application was deleted.

To complete an Assignment Queue application, login to eHousing, Apply for Housing for Fall 2020/Spring 2021 and you will be directed to the Fall 2020 Assignment Queue.  The Assignment Queue allows you to complete a housing application without making a hall/room type selection.  Doing so will establish a position on the AQ based on the date and time that you complete the process with an application payment.

I’m interested in living on campus but what exactly is the Assignment Queue?

At the point it is activated, the Assignment Queue will be the opportunity for students that had not yet completed an application with a hall and room-type preference to put themselves on the list for possible assignment in to remaining spaces.  By completing the application and making their housing pre-payment (and application fee as applicable), you will be placed on the Assignment Queue and will be assigned during the summer as we have space to do so.

Some important things to note about the AQ:

  1. The AQ application does not allow you to specify a hall or room type preference.
    • At the point you reach the top of the AQ, you will be assigned to the next space that is available for use.
  2. The AQ application requires full payment of the pre-payment and housing application fee in order to take your spot in line on the actual AQ.
    • You won’t be assigned a number on the AQ until you make the payment to complete your application
  3. Students can review their position and progress on the AQ through the Assignment Queue Status link in eHousing.
    • Once you complete the application, you will be able to find out where you fall in line on the AQ.
  4. Students that want to cancel an AQ application must contact Housing to do so.
    • If you decide to secure off-campus housing, it is your responsibility to contact UNT Housing to cancel your AQ application and avoid assignment to a room assigned. Housing will discuss the refund process individually with students that wish to cancel from the AQ.

While we hope to be able to accommodate everyone, there is a possibility that not all returning and transfer students that complete an AQ application will be able to be assigned to Housing for the coming year.

eHousing shutdown for app management

Each week on Monday morning, UNT Housing deletes expired Fall 2020/Spring 2021 applications from our system. To facilitate this operation, eHousing will be unavailable Monday mornings between 8:30 AM and 12 PM.

Students hoping to avoid deletion may complete their application by making the application payment within ten days of beginning that application.

We appreciate your patience with this process.

Clarification of upperclassman on-campus housing availability for Fall 2020/Spring 2021

For more than 40 years, UNT policy has required on-campus residency for first-year students to allow new students to engage with UNT in many important ways. In anticipation of the continued growth of the freshman class for Fall 2020, Housing has allocated adequate bed space to continue to meet the residency requirement.

UNT has not changed any policy regarding the housing of upperclassmen on campus for the Fall 2020/Spring 2021 application period. Bed space allocation and room-type availability decisions have been made to meet the anticipated freshmen demands for the coming academic year.

As demand for bed spaces for freshmen has increased, the bed space availability for upperclassmen has consequently decreased.

All students continue to apply for housing in the same manner as before, according to their student classification (first-year student, returning student, transfer student). Housing will soon make the Assignment Queue available for returning students that wish to apply.

We understand that the limited availability of upperclassman space is not an ideal situation for some of our returning students.  UNT works closely with the Denton off-campus housing market and devotes time and resources to helping students obtain off-campus housing.

The revamped Off-Campus Housing Source is available to explore the Denton off-campus housing market.

Summer Housing Application

The housing application for students to live on campus for the Summer 2020 term will be available starting at 9 AM on Monday, April 13th through eHousing.

Students will be able to apply for any combination of the 3 available terms - May-mester (3WK1), Summer 1 (5WK1) and Summer 2 (5WK2) to correspond with terms that they are enrolled for classes.

Term dates, available residence halls and room types, meal plan options, and all associated rates are available on the 2020 Summer Rates section of the Housing website.

eHousing Waiting Room

eHousing Waiting Room

So the Housing Application process runs smoothly, we have measures in place to manage the number of simultaneous users in eHousing.  As peak usage occurs for eHousing, you may find yourself in the eHousing Waiting Room.  Think of it like getting ready to purchase concert tickets or taking a number at a classy deli.

Here is what you can expect:

  1. You will be assigned a place in the line when you initally arrive at eHousing.
  2. The number will decrease as you wait.
    • The page will auto-refresh on a regular interval to update your place in line.
  3. Once you reach the front of the line, you will be able to log in to eHousing.

It is important to keep the browser window open to maintain your Waiting Room session.  You do not need to refresh the browser to progress toward getting to the front of the line.

We understand that everyone wants to make their housing arrangements as soon as possible and appreciate the patience that is necessary to ensure that eHousing can deliver that service as intended.

Thanks,

UNT HOUSING

Suite Bathroom Lock Information

In January 2015, UNT received a directive from the State Fire Marshal's Office (SFMO) to examine the bathroom locks in all residential bathrooms to determine if the locks met National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) Life Safety Code requirements for Hotels and Dormitories and if locks existed that did not meet those requirements a solution to eliminate the possibility of a person becoming trapped in the bathroom was required.  UNT conducted an evaluation of its residence hall bathroom facilities and found that our suite bathroom locks did not meet the NFPA code and we began the process to address the SFMO directive.

UNT explored many alternatives to the bathroom door hardware and was unable to find any that met the NFPA code requirements and provided feasible individual room security.  Additionally, UNT was told that the State Fire Marshall's office was not aware of a locking alternative that would meet fire code directive and be approved.  Ultimately, UNT decided that removal of the bathroom locks on all suited bathroom doors was the only solution to comply with the State Fire Marshall’s directive.  UNT as well as every major university housing operation we have contacted have implemented similar steps to remove non-compliant locks.

The process to remove all suite bathroom locking hardware began in the late summer of 2015 and was completed in all residence halls during the fall 2015 semester.

UNT and UNT Housing remain committed to resident safety, security, wellbeing and success through numerous layers and measures of support.  Students should use this as an opportunity to engage their suite-mates in a dialog about how to develop boundaries, shared respect and measures to secure the privacy, safety, and security of all students and their friends who are sharing a suite.  College should teach our students the skills they need to meet new and different people, engage in meaningful communication, resolve differences, and negotiate shared solutions.  UNT Housing staff is encouraging these discussions through RA wing and Hall meetings and are trained and prepared to facilitate these discussions as well as mediate and resolve suite-mate issues.

UNT and UNT Housing do not condone individual measures for residents to circumvent the State Fire Marshall's directive. Any such actions, if known to UNT Housing will result in judicial action from UNT Housing and if actions persist, University judicial sanctions.  Measures for residents to circumvent the State Fire Marshall's directive could potentially subject residents to further legal liability if their action were to cause harm to one of their suite-mates.

UNT can allow students to utilize safety alarms on bathroom doors that do not impede the ability to exit the bathroom space but provide an audible alert upon entry of the bedroom space from the bathroom.  Students can find acceptable options at many retail locations and through online consumer sites – a generic search result for "door alarm" will produce several reasonably priced options for consideration.

Students or parents with concerns may contact Housing Administration at housinginfo@unt.edu

Housing payments through myUNT account

All balances for UNT Housing room and board charges are posted to each student’s myUNT account with their tuition and fee charges for the semester.

How does it work?

Following being assigned to a room, UNT Housing will transfer all charges to a student’s myUNT account for payment.  The total charge amount for the semester will be listed in the term summary as “Room and Board Charges”.  Students are able to review details of their account through their eHousing account.

Accepted Financial Aid is directly applied to the semester UNT Housing balance by Student Accounting, following full payment of tuition and fees.  As a result, depending on the total amount of accepted aid for the semester, a student may have a remaining balance for UNT Housing room and board.  Remaining semester charges are able to paid in full or split in to three installment payment over the course of the long semester.  The installment plan for UNT Housing is applied automatically to any student with an unpaid room and board balance and there is no additional cost for the installment plan.

How do I make a payment?

Payments for any remaining UNT Housing balance, following the application of accepted aid, must be made through a student’s myUNT account or through the Student Financial Services staff in the Eagle Student Services Center.  Housing does not accept payment for semester charges.

What else should I know?

Students should be prepared to have out of pocket funds to make textbook and class supply purchases because tuition, fee and housing charges are all paid prior to a financial aid refund disbursement to the student.  If the student’s accepted aid for the semester is exhausted by the UNT term charges, there will not be remaining funds to be dispersed to the student.

Students with questions about their financial aid award for the year should consult with Student Financial Aid and Scholarships

For assistance with budget planning or to inquire about loan programs options that are available to assist with textbook purchases, students should consult with the Student Money Management Center.
