About Us

We are currently working from home with limited campus visits, and can respond to emails or Teams/Zoom during the regular work day.

We are the department that makes and maintains the master archive of university ensembles, faculty and degree recitals recordings along with live streaming and the youtube channel. We also record non-degree, guest and contracted performances, and recording sessions. Recordings are tracked in College of Music venues only, we do not operate a recording studio space and do not record off-campus. Recordings are delivered to the Willis Library for long-term storage.

Recording Services is managed by Blair Liikala and Austin Martinez with offices in both the Main Music Building, and the Murchison Performing Arts Center. There is about 6 student staff from a wide range of majors who record, edit and duplicate recitals and concerts for the College of Music.

We work on Logic, ProTools, and Final Cut with two master control rooms in the Main Music building one in the the Murchison Performing Arts Center Annex. We operate one of the largest Dante audio systems over a dedicated network along with SDI video and video processing encoders and streaming servers using a private infrastructure of switches, copper and +200 fiber optic lines. We have a wide variety and quantity of microphones, preamps, and classic outboard gear to fit the diverse classical and jazz events from recording sessions to live streaming. This site & server is maintained by Blair.

Working Here

We hire one or sometimes two students a year. If you're interested, please email your resume and cover letter to our email address. The minimum requirements for employment are that you must be a UNT student able to work in the US with more than a year before graduation, and be able to work evenings and weekend with a variable range of hours. It helps to have tech skills since you would be operating equipment.

Career Center. Login, and search for a student recording engineer position for the College of Music. Note that the job listing will not show if we are not currently hiring.

Other Technical Work

College of Music General Access Lab "is intended to provide an environment where students can record high quality work related to their academic endeavors." The GA lab is run mostly by students and work is done within the studio (vs in the performances halls which is what RS oversees).

The Murchison Performing Arts Center houses the Winspear and Lyric Halls and hosts larger ensembles and opera. RS records in these halls as well, and works with the MPAC's professional technical staff (Julie and Derek). If you're interested in theatrical lighting and live sound head to their website (thempac.com) for more information. They typically post and hire through the Career Center.
