Sacrifice and determination. That’s what it takes for Rayann Darbro (everyone calls her Ray), to pursue her education during the day while working for the unive...rsity all night.

Ray is a senior University of North Texas Honors College student working on two degrees, one in UNT College of Information Library Sciences and one in UNT College of Visual Arts + Design Studio Art – Metalsmithing and Jewelry Making, minoring in Art History. After classes, when campus is closed for the night, Ray works as a custodian. She didn’t know a soul when she first moved to Denton with her pup, Theodore, but she settled in nicely.

“My favorite thing about UNT is the people. Some of the people I’ve met through my job and classes have helped me out tremendously,” says Ray. “Also, I adore the Metals Department, but I may be biased, as it’s my home away from home during the semester.”

In her spare time, Ray is into all things art!

“My grandma taught me to knit and crochet when I was in grade school. I crochet more than I knit and every summer I try to do a big (or more intricate) project that I don’t have time to do during the semester. It’s not uncommon to find yarn and a hook in whatever bag I’m carrying.”

Ray also believes in giving back so she spends some of her free time volunteering for events on campus through the UNT University Program Council (UPC), Honors College and the Fiber Collective.

“I love working with fibers, and just this year I learned how to weave so I’ve been doing some of that recently, too.”

It’s great to meet you, Ray!
