Outstanding Lecturer Award

The UNT Foundation Outstanding Lecturer Award recognizes a full-time lecturer who has made significant and sustained contributions to the university as evidenced by the quality of their teaching and service.

 

Management

Michael Sexton is an alumnus and senior lecturer in the Department of Management. He worked in industry for 23 years before joining UNT in 1999. Professor Sexton has taught more than 10,760 students enrolled in 11 different courses. He was one of the first instructors at UNT to incorporate multiple location video conferencing technology. He regularly uses TurningPoint clickers, Skype classroom conferencing, and story board exercises; has taught flipped classrooms since 2001; and has required PechaKucha in-class presentations since 2009. 

Professor Sexton co-mentored 12 new UNT faculty members from 2015 to 2019 through the Office of the Provost. He has mentored hundreds of undergraduate students, supervised 15 doctoral students and has taught 400-plus students at Dallas Hillcrest High School. He has conducted 12 study abroad programs with more than 250 students. Students are introduced to corporate leaders to discuss global strategy and marketing, define customer value proposition, and measure value-chain activities. The next program is headed to Spain during June and July 2019.

He has been awarded Teacher of the Year in Management (2016), Educator of the Year in Management (2010), the Citation of Distinguished Service to International Education (2010), and University Outstanding Online Teacher/Course of the Year (2006). He has served as a faculty senator from 2016 to 2019 and as chair of the Management Study Abroad Programs and the Scholarship Committee from 2016 to 2019.
