Today is the 75th Anniversary of the bombing at Pearl Harbor. Check out this story of Joe George and the men whose lives he saved that day. George has shared stories about his time in the Navy with the UNT Oral History Program, which is housed here at the UNT Libraries.

Lauren Bruner was a fire controlman. Donald Stratton was a seaman first class. Neither man knew Joe George. Neither would have lived through the next day without him.

We are sorry to have to share this news. Jack Evans, a friend to the program, a tremendous supporter of local efforts to collect LGBT history, and an all-around great guy, has passed away.
Karen Wisely's interview with Jack and George for the UNT OHP is being processed and should be available to researchers shortly.

The Corpus Christi Caller-Times has a feature today on the Civil Rights in Black and Brown Oral History Project. James Wall, a UNT undergrad who is now working on his PhD at the University of Georgia, and Moises Acuna-Gurrola, who earned his MA at UNT this spring and is moving on to TCU in the fall, are in Corpus this summer recording interviews for the project.

“Civil Rights in Black and Brown: Oral Histories of the Multiracial Freedom Struggles in Texas” collects and interprets oral history interviews with members of black, white and Hispanic groups from different areas of the state.

We often hear the questions "Why do you need to hire people to transcribe oral histories? Why don't you just run them through voice recognition software?" Here's an interesting answer.

The task of providing accurate transcriptions of long blocks of actual human conversation remains beyond the abilities of today's most advanced software.
