About Sacramento Kings
11/29/12: Sacramento was expected by many to make a move this season. They have developed and acquired quality talent and looked poised to win. But they are only 4-10 to start the season. The offense is struggling due to poor ball movement which is not generating quality shots. The team can not seem to rebound and they take too many fouls. But perhaps the biggest issue a lack of team chemistry. It is still early in the season, so fortunes can change, but if the rest of the season continues this way then the Kings are in line for a lottery pick.
11/22/12: Sacramento sits at 3-8 and last place in the Pacific Division. But any win over the Lakers is sweet. While the rest of the basketball world is fretting over the Lakers' poor start, coach firing, and controversial hiring of Mike D'Antoni, there are still other teams out there who are playing games. The Kings put together a strong team effort, playing well on both sides of the court and supplemented by competent coaching. The final result, a comfortable 113-97 crushing that ended a five game losing streak and should give the team confidence that they can play with anyone in the West.
11/15/12: DeMarcus Cousins is in the news, and again it is not for his talent or play. The NBA gave Cousins a two game suspension for an altercation with San Antonio announcer Sean Elliot. Cousins has already served the suspension, but of course the NBA Players Union is appealing the punishment to get Cousins paid the $70,500 he lost. Cousins has been labeled immature throughout his career, and this latest incident is turning fan sentiment against him - possibly to the point where the Kings may trade him so they will not have to deal with these types of issues anymore.
11/8/12: A couple of weeks into the season and the Kings are 1-3, trailing the Warriors and Clippers by one game. Tyreke Evans has been the team's most complete player so far. His scoring ability is not questioned - he can generate points. But his defensive improvement has been outstanding. He guarded Luol Deng well in the opener and had two blocks and three steals against Indiana. On the other hand, DeMarcus Cousins has room to improve. He is averaging 15.3 points and 8 rebounds a game, but this is a player who has the opportunity to join the NBA elite.
11/1/12: Reports (such as the one by Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports) are surfacing that the NBA is pressuring the Maloof family to sell the Kings, possibly to a group including Steve Ballmer (Microsoft CEO) in order to move the team to Seattle. Seattle has been without an NBA team since the Sonics moved to Oklahoma City a few years ago, and the city is currently building a new arena to house an NBA and/or NHL team. The Maloofs backed away from a deal with the City of Sacramento for a new deal and have resisted pressure to move to Anaheim. There is no deal yet, and the Kings are still in Sacramento - but this is a story worth keeping an eye on.
10/18/12: The Triangle Offense may have been popularized and perfected by Phil Jackson and his Bulls and Lakers teams, but elements of the system actually goes back at least to the Harlem Globetrotters in 1943. The Triangle promotes movement and ball sharing. And Kieth Smart now will try to incorporate the Triangle into the Kings offense this season. Sacramento has loads of talent, maybe what they are missing is a comprehensive ball control system to get the most out of Tyreke Evans, Marcus Thornton, DeMarcus Cousins, and Thomas Robinson. With a full offseason to work on it, hopefully the team can put it to use successfully this season.
10/4/12: The first sign of the injury bug has arrived, and second year forward Tyson Honeycutt will miss the next three to four weeks with a stress fracture in his right fibula. The regular season is still a few weeks away, so this is no time to worry. The Kings are trying to improve upon a dismal 22-44 record last season, which was shortened due to the lockout a year ago. But the main personnel, particularly Tyreke Evans and DeMarcus Cousins are healthy. And the team needs those two young men to really step up if they are going to compete in the West.
8/16/12: Not often are the words 'optimism' and 'Golden State Warriros' mentioned in the same sentence, but that is exactly the situation in Oakland. Many fans were upset when Golden State let the popular Monte Ellis go in a move to build around Stephen Curry. Curry, of course, missed 41 games with a sprained ankle and is still rehabbing. Howeve, Curry let his ankle heal, rather than again rushing himself. Now he claims that he is finally recovering from the ankle pain that has plagued him for the past two years. He is optimistic that he can play without any restrictions by October 31, which is what the Warriors sorely need.
8/2/12: Not too long ago, the Lakers and Kings had epic postseason battles to determine who was the best in the West. While the Lakers have continued their excellence, Sacramento has fallen on hard times. But the rivalry will be renewed, albeit in preseasson form. Of the Kings seven preseason games, three are against the Lakers. This is actually pretty important, because it will give the young Kings a good test as they prepare for the new season and hope to escape the Lottery Process. Maybe the hardest part for the Sacramento coaching staff will be on October 19th, when they team plays LA in Las Vegas, and all the trouble that comes with such a venue.
7/26/12: Sacramento signed first round pick (5th overall) Thomas Robinson to a four year deal. The power forward from Kansas was the Big 12 Player of the Year last season, averaging 17.7 points and 11.9 rebounds per game as a junior. Robinson is already making his presence know as a vocal leader in the Summer League, and claims he wants to show that he is more of an overall player than what he showed in college. The Summer League is beneficial to Robinson and the Kings, and allows the young man a chance to adjust to NBA-level play before the start of the new season.
The Sacramento Kings went with size for their first round selection in Thursday night's NBA Draft, taking the 6'9" Thomas Robinson from Kansas with the fifth overall pick. Robinson averaged a double-double in his junior season at Kansas, with 17.7 points and 11.9 rebounds and should be a perfect fit to jump in and immediately make an impact in Sacramento, a team that sorely needs a strong presence in the paint. The Kings went for a shooting guard with their second round pick, taking Orlando Johnson from UC Santa Barbara with the 36th overall pick.
5/22/12: The Golden State Warriors are getting a new arena. Plans are all but finalized to put a new stadium in LA. And yet plans for a new arena in the state capital remain in neutral. Most will agree that ARCO Arena is outdated and can not really support an NBA franchise. However, a 22-44 record does not give the Maloof brothers much leverage or sympathy. The Maloofs have previously threatened to move the team, possibly to Southern California, but agreed to stick around at least another year. In the meantime, negotiations between the city and the club have grown bitter, and next season may well be the last in Sacramento.
5/15/12: A new arena for the Sacramento Kings remains elusive, as the team and city officials continue a particular nasty debate which may encourage the Maloof brothers to move the team out of the state capital. As the Kings sit out of the playoffs for the sixth consectutive season, the NBA began handing out its regular season awards. Isaiah Thomas, the 60th pick in the 2011 draft, placed 7th in Rookie of the Year voting. Thomas earned a starting role, averaging 25.5 minutes, 11.5 points, and 4.1 assists per game, as well as Rookie of the Month in February and March.
5/11/12: The Kings did not enjoy the success they envisioned and missed the playoffs for the sixth consectutive season. Sacramento fielded the youngest roster in the league, and it showed with bouts of erratic play and indecisiveness on the court. One thing the Kings may have gotten right was replacing coach Paul Westphal with Kieth Smart early in the season. Smart was able to get more scoring out of the team, averaging a respectable 99.3 points per game. However, the Kings also allowed a league-high 104.6 points per game. The key to improvement is obvious, the Kings need defensive help in the offseason.
5/3/12: The Kings ended the season with 22 wins versus 44 losses, finishing one game out of last place in the West. Sacramento has missed the playoffs for the past six years, and once again looks to the draft for help, where they will have the fifth overall selection - thanks to winning a tie breaker with the New Jersey Nets. Just as frustrating as their play has been the negotiations between the team and government about building a new areaa. The Kings have threatened to move without a new arean, but the issue is at a stalemate and may be completely dead.
