Brian Sweany

Brian D. Sweany started out as an intern in the publisher’s office of TEXAS MONTHLY in January 1996 and was hired as a copy editor in the editorial department nine months later. Born in Richardson and raised in Plano, Sweany earned a bachelor’s degree in English literature from the University of North Texas, in Denton, and a master’s degree in English literature from the University of Texas at San Antonio. In July 2009, he was promoted to deputy editor.

Sweany has also served as an assistant professor in the journalism department at Ithaca College, in New York, and as a senior editor at D Magazine, in Dallas. He is active in a number of civic and volunteer organizations, including serving on the board of the Children’s Advocacy Centers of Texas  He lives in Sachse with his wife, two children, a golden retriever, and an unfinished biography of Sam Rayburn.
