What we offer

State-of-the-art equipment, an excellent curriculum and engaged faculty make UNT's Media Arts program one of the nation's best.

We provide you with a strong, theoretical education combined with hands-on experience utilizing the same tools used by industry professionals. You can further hone your skills by working at our 100,000-watt radio station (KNTU-FM) or cable television station (ntTV). Student workers at these stations have earned:

  • Broadcast Education Association awards
  • EMPixx Awards
  • Hometown Media Awards
  • Lone Star Emmy Awards
  • Telly Awards
  • Various recognitions from the Texas Associated Press Broadcasters and the regional chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists

Our students and alumni have also competed in film contests and had their work screened at film festivals around the world.

In addition to earning a bachelor's degree, you can earn certificates in television news producing, media management and Spanish language media.

Media Arts faculty members include internationally recognized scholars; seasoned media professionals with backgrounds in production, news, broadcasting and new media; and award-winning documentary and narrative filmmakers.

Their books are used in university courses throughout the world, and faculty-produced films and programs have aired on network television and been screened at New York's Museum of Modern Art. They also work for and have been recognized by national and international organizations focusing on media education and film preservation.

We are an institutional member of the Broadcast Education Association, Texas Association of Broadcasters, and the University Film and Video Association. These organizations provide our faculty members additional perspectives on current issues and topics.

Internship opportunities abound due to the university's location within the North Texas region, which is ranked the nation's fifth largest media market. Internships allow you to gain valuable work experience and possibly earn academic credit.

Scholarships are available to eligible students.

Our Living-Learning Community (LLC) brings together Media Arts majors who live on campus to enhance academic and social experiences. LLCs give you the chance to form strong bonds by taking several classes with a small group of your Media Arts classmates.

What to expect

To become a Media Arts major, you'll need to complete at least 42 credit hours of coursework, including several required pre-major courses, with a UNT GPA of 2.75 or better. Transfer students should expect to spend one or more semesters as pre-majors before applying to the program. Visit the catalog for more details.

Your courses will focus on perspectives on film; perspectives on radio, television and converged media; and broadcast or film production.
