Undergraduate Admissions

To help make your experience as smooth as possible, begin reviewing the UNT College of Engineering Viewbook and the UNT Freshman Overview. These resources will help you determine if the college and university are good fits for you by offering overviews of important information, student testimonials and ways to get more information about UNT undergraduate programs.

We also encourage all prospective students to visit the campus before applying to UNT to experience the culture and student life. Schedule a tour of the UNT campus or request a tour of the UNT College of Engineering.

  • Freshman Applicants

All freshman applicants to UNT must submit SAT I or ACT scores. High school seniors who plan to attend UNT should take these entrance examinations at least five months before enrollment dates. See your high school counselor for more information, or contact the College Board or the ACT.

Applicants who graduate in the top 10 percent of their high school class will automatically be admitted into the university. Alternatively, you will be guaranteed admission if you:

    • Rank in the next 15 percent and have a minimum 950 SAT I (critical reading/verbal + math) or 20 ACT or
    • Rank in the second quarter and have a minimum 1050 SAT I (critical reading/verbal + math) or 23 ACT or
    • Rank in the third quarter and have a minimum 1180 SAT I (critical reading/verbal + math) or 26 ACT.

Applicants who rank in the fourth quarter or applicants who do not meet the above requirements will have their application reviewed by a UNT admissions officer.

Freshmen applicants must also meet the following departmental admissions requirements in addition to what the university requires:

    • math SAT score of 540 or higher or a math ACT score of 22 or higher

Once admitted into the university, students must take a math placement test in order to determine which level course to enroll in. The Department of Mathematics offers examinations for math placement throughout the year.

The writing section of the SAT I or ACT is not a requirement for admission to UNT. However, it is highly recommended.

For more information, visit the Admissions Office.

  • Transfer Applicants

Transfer applicants should be eligible to enroll in Math 1710 (Calculus I) at UNT or in a higher level math class.

For applicants who do not meet the above requirements, admission will be granted to a pre-engineering program in the College of Arts and Sciences. The applicant will be eligible to be admitted to the College of Engineering after completing Math 1650 (Pre-Calculus) with a grade of C or better.

Contact the engineering technology department (link to contact page) for more information.
