Tours & Research Appointments

Starting in Spring 2019, the Texas Fashion Collection's facilities will include a research space for object-based learning and small lectures. These new facilities will feature a study collection drawn from the TFC's holdings, with garments and accessories that relate directly to student learning at the University of North Texas.  While the primary audience for this space is university students and professors, the TFC welcomes designers and independent scholars from all backgrounds to conduct research in this space.

Please note that the TFC does not have permanent exhibition space or regular gallery hours, so all tours and research appointments require advance planning.

Guidelines

Starting in Spring 2019, the TFC will be available by appointment only for tours and research appointments, which can be scheduled between 8:30am-5pm Monday-Friday. Because of staffing limitations and the TFC's educational focus, priority is given to individuals and groups with professional or research interests relating to the TFC's holdings.  As per the University of North Texas System, offices are closed during federal, state, and university holidays, which can be found here.

To protect the objects in the collection, please plan for your tour or appointment in the following way:

  • Bring a pencil, notepad, camera, and/or smartphone to take notes during your visit. Pens, markers, and flash photography are not allowed.
  • While the TFC study space has limited shelving for backpacks and bags, food and beverage are strictly forbidden to ensure the safety of our objects and cleanliness of our space.
  • For research appointments, dress in a manner that will not damage the objects. Consider how your clothing, cosmetics, or accessories might snag or transfer onto objects.

Tours

At least two weeks in advance, contact TFC staff by sending an email tfc@unt.edu or calling 940-565-2732. Please share the name of your group, the number of people in attendance, and the purpose of your visit. For non-university groups, tours on specific subjects are available for a small fee.

Research Appointments

At least one week in advance, contact TFC Director Annette Becker at annette.becker@unt.edu. Include the research question you are posing, the outcome of the research (class assignment, publication, lecture), and two times that you are available. TFC staff select objects for study and can work with you to create a bibliography of reference materials to supplement your object-based study. Because of limited staffing, appointments usually last no more than one hour. Though only a limited number of objects can be consulted during an appointment, a portion of the collection is available online through the TFC Digital Library.
