NOTICE TO STUDENTS REGARDING LICENSING
Effective September 1, 2017, HB 1508 created new laws that require entities that provide educational programs leading to an occupational license to notify all applicants an enrollees of the implications of a felony conviction which may make you ineligible for an license upon program completion. The law requires that this information be provided to all persons who are enrolled or apply in a teaching program without regard to whether the person has been convicted of a criminal offense.

You also have a right to request a criminal history evaluation letter from TEA and the process and form available online at https://tea.texas.gov/Texas_Educators/Investigations/Preliminary_Criminal_History_Evaluation-FAQs/.
Pre-Major Requirements
UNT offers a bachelor's in social work degree (BSW). To get started earning this degree, you must first seek admission to UNT. If you are attending college for the very first time, you can learn more about admissions from our Freshman Overview. If you are taking courses from another university or community college, you can learn more about entering UNT and getting transfer credit from TransferNow.
All students start the program as "pre social work" majors. You should indicate this major when completing your ApplyTexas application. The pre-social work part of the degree program takes approximately two years to complete and consists of core courses, electives and/or minor classes, and three social work prerequisites:
- SOWK 1450 – Introduction to Social Work
- SOWK 2430 – Policies, Issues, and Programs in Social Welfare
- SOWK 3000 – Foundations of Interviewing
Your academic counselor will be assigned by the Advising Office of the College of Health and Public Service. The role of this advisor is to help answer questions on issues like the transfer of credits from other institutions, university core courses, electives and minor requirements.
Students must have made substantial progress in the completion of core courses prior to entering the major. Admission to the social work program is competitive and requires a formal application process. One important indicator for admission is how students perform in these pre-major courses.
