UNT Internship Program

The University of North Texas recognizes the significant value internships provide for both employers and students. The UNT Internship Program works closely with employers to develop internships within their organizations and assists students in obtaining high-quality internships prior to graduation. The mission of the program is to develop well-prepared students who, through the benefits of experiential education, become the next generation of leaders for the global community. We welcome and encourage you to post your opportunities with us! Please find below the detailed instructions for the internship process at UNT including how to post, guidelines/regulations, and internship recruitment.

What is an Internship?

An internship is a work experience (typically one semester in length) related to the student’s field of study with an emphasis on “on-the-job” training rather than merely employment. Although some internships are unpaid, our program strives to promote paid opportunities. Depending on the requirements of the degree program, a student may or may not receive college credit for an internship. In some degree programs, an internship is required.

Recruiting for Internships

All internship positions are posted in Handshake. Posting an Internship Position provides detailed information about the posting process including how to create an effective internship description. The Internship Marketing & Recruitment at UNT resource provides information about how to connect with students at UNT.

Internship Guidelines and Regulations

All UNT internships must follow the internship requirements as established by the National Association of Colleges and Employers and the U.S. Department of Labor. The NACE Position Statement: U.S. Internships provides a definition and criteria for internships that employers should review. In addition, the DOL has published the Fact Sheet #71: Internship Programs Under the Fair Labor Standards Act concerning unpaid internships. UNT follows these regulations and guidelines when approving internship opportunities for posting.
