Welcome Eve Bell

We are pleased to announce that Eve Shatteen Bell has rejoined Equity & Diversity as the new Assistant Vice President and the Director of the Office of Equal Opportunity. Some of you may remember her as she was previously employed at UNT as Assistant Director of OEO in 2017.

Ms. Bell previously worked with the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) and as Director of Institutional Access and Equity at Southern Methodist University.

Her wealth of experience and collaborative spirit will allow her to do great things here at UNT and the division is thrilled to have her back on the team.

Beyond the Surface: Examining Implicit Bias

Our 2019 keynote speaker is Howard J. Ross, lifelong social justice advocate considered one of the world's seminal thought leaders on identifying and addressing unconscious bias. Howard authored the Washington Post best seller, Everyday Bias: Identifying and Navigating Unconscious Judgments in Our Daily Lives (2014) and ReInventing Diversity: Transforming Organizational Community to Strengthen People, Purpose and Performance, (2011). His new book, Our Search for Belonging: How the Need for Connection is Tearing Our Culture Apart, will be published in 2018.

Staff Retreat

The Office of Institutional Equity & Diversity recently held its fourth annual planning retreat on July 31, 2018 at Apogee Stadium. The day-long retreat highlighted division growth, allowed staff to learn more about emotional intelligence, and provided an opportunity to plan for the division’s work over the next five years.

Strategic Goals

The Division of Institutional Equity & Diversity's ongoing commitment to inclusive excellence begins with following its three primary goals:

1. Develop a more efficient business model
2. Cultivate internal and external partnerships
3. Institutionalize equity and diversity initiatives at UNT

The Buddy System is now F.L.Y.

The Multicultural Center is proud to host the F.L.Y. Peer Ambassador Program (Fortify the Leader in You)! The F.L.Y. Peer Ambassador Program was created to connect incoming first year students and transfer students to the University of North Texas by providing them with mentors who are sophomore, juniors, seniors, or graduate students.

Community Engagement Events

Dallas Pride Parade: September 16
Join the UNT Pride Alliance for their fifth annual participation in the Dallas Pride Parade! In 2018, Dallas will celebrate the 35th Anniversary of the Alan Ross Texas Freedom Parade. Named in honor of Alan Ross, the longtime executive director of the Dallas Tavern Guild, the spirit of Pride and celebration shines through each year. The UNT Pride Alliance does not have a float but participates on the ground. If you would like to be a spectator, the parade starts at 2:00 pm and travels down Cedar Springs Road from Wycliff Ave. to Turtle Creek Blvd. Participants can witness the parade on either side of Cedar Springs Road, staying behind the barricades. Often, Queer and Trans people are unable to declare themselves in public for fear of exclusion or violence. The Dallas Pride Parade is a great way for all students to honor and celebrate the visibility of Queer and Trans people. For more information, email Alex Sylvester at alex.sylvester@unt.edu.

Join the Multicultural Center as we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15th - October 15th. We will highlight the various Latinx experiences and identities of our campus community through a variety of engaging programs and events.

Office of Equal Opportunity Posters

Be on the lookout for Title IX Posters distributed this fall by OEO in multiple locations throughout campus, including academic buildings and residence halls. The posters provide information on what to do and whom to contact if a student, faculty or staff member experiences or witnesses sexual misconduct.

Faculty and Staff Night at Apogee

Make plans to be at the UNT faculty and staff appreciation football game!
Please join your fellow UNT employees for Faculty/Staff Appreciation night at Apogee Stadium on Saturday, September 8, 2018. Full time faculty and staff are given two free tickets to attend the game with additional tickets only $5 each. Come support your North Texas Football team against Incarnate Word. UNT Staff Senate will be tailgating at 4 p.m. just north of the stadium near the Alumni Pavilion. Lots of fun for the whole family!
